The Pisgah Church marked its centennial with sermons and addresses recalling Rev. John Akin’s era. Old fashioned love feast and hearty dinners highlighted Sunday services as the congregation reflected on a century of faith and fellowship.
Carmack enthusiasm rose at Mt Pleasant Saturday as a strong Carmack Club formed for the seventh district with about 800 members. John Brownlow elected president and Charles Jackson secretary and treasurer. A follow up meeting will have Hon J H Dinning speak and is expected to enroll half the district voters. Leaders promise a majority and aggressive campaign.
Ashley Wilkins secured the deal for Innes Band to perform next Monday afternoon and evening at the Opera House. Columbians may hear the band’s programs with 300 season tickets still available at 1.50 each until Thursday morning. Seats drop to 1.00 for afternoon and 0.25 for evening at Alcorn's from Thursday.
Rev W T Boaz will address Globe in Marshall county on June 1 to discuss statewide prohibition and temperance. Patterson leaders seek a time division. Boaz agrees to limit debate to the named issues and use the same plan as Governor Patterson and Senator Carmack.
Fire raged Saturday afternoon destroying the home of Jesse Lane at the corner of Fourteenth and Galloway, with contents. Insurance valued at 900 pounds and 350 dollars. Mrs Lane saved her jewelry, while the bank of John Smith was put out with little damage.
The article recalls the early Methodist travelers who settled Virginia and the Carolinas then moved into Maury County in 1807 led by Rev. John Akin from South Carolina. A verdict convicting John Doyle of selling liquor without license was returned after a short deliberation in Circuit Court. In Columbia a Civic Improvement League was formed with women as active members and men as associates, with plans for a permanent organization and community projects.
Col. R. L. Collings of Kentucky Supreme President and R. P. Nichols of Ohio Supreme Secretary are in Columbia to promote the Fraternal Censor. Collings, a former governor staff member, discussed campaigns in Tennessee and Kentucky and toured the Columbia Military Academy with interest.
A petition filed with the State Railroad Commission seeks an investigation of ownership and control of the Nashville American. Signers include Chas H Fort of the Tobacco Growers Protective Association and ex Governor Chas H Wartel with others alleging the Louisville and Nashville Railroad owns and subsidizes the paper to the public's detriment and in breach of law.
Miss Julia Holcomb aged T1 and a nearby helper, Annie Brown, both died of heart trouble in Columbia. Holcomb lived on Eighth and Embargo streets. Brown entered to assist and collapsed. Funeral held at residence with interment at Roa Hill.
Ned Davis of Carter's Creek returns from a Birmingham reunion where voters on the gubernatorial race favored Carmack. In the Columbia coach 24 for Carmack and 6 for Patterson. overall 63 Carmack and 87 Patterson among Birmingham visitors, with nine of ten Tennesseans supporting Carmack.
A heavy wind storm Saturday afternoon caused damage across the city. Shade trees were broken, the courthouse dome suffered from twisted and blown ornamental pieces, and windows or wings were blown from their hinges along the streets.
A Sunday Opera House gathering in Columbia Maury County featured Hon. James A. Tate urging funds for the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. The crowd raised 464.50 dollars, far surpassing previous records, with wide support from women, church groups, and some male attendees. Tate outlined temperance progress, deplored city saloon influence, and urged votes for prohibition allies in the upcoming primary.
Professor J. W. Brister of Peabody Normal and Dr. Roberts head the Maury County Teachers Institute at the Atheneum. More than eighty teachers registered and over one hundred attended as County Superintendent J. P. Graham presides for a two week session. Miss Lottie Wilkins is secured as primary instructor with additional department leaders to follow.
A. Compton, a machinist in the north freight yard of the Louisville and Nashville railroad, was found Saturday at nine in an unconscious state. He left home in good health and appeared at work, later collapsing. He was taken to his Columbia home for medical care and remains in serious condition with paralysis on his right side.
Rev W T Boaz accepts Patterson county Marshall challenge for June 19 at Globe. Col Carter of the Governor's staff chosen to speak after Bong opens with an hour. Carter will address for four and a half hours plus Bong's thirty minute rebuttal. Large audience anticipated for a heated prohibition debate.
The Maury County Medical Society met Monday in the Chancery Court room with fair attendance. Dr Morene Ragelate gave an interesting talk on Poneréne followed by a full discussion. Dr O J Porter was chosen to read the paper next meeting on The Baleon and the Bune Marrow.
