Sewerage Extension and Aldermen Debate

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen met with most members present as they debated extending the sewerage system. Pythian Decoration Day Observed by Two Lodges

John C. Dexter and Phintias Lodges A. of P observed Decoration Day in a Sunday ceremony. The two lodges marched from their datles to Rose Hill, formed a circle in the cemetery, and, led by Dr. T. A. Wharton, opened the service. W. B. Turner gave a talk on Pythianism before the benediction and the two groups laid flowers on nineteen graves.

Small Fire Destroys Room House on Thirteenth Street

Fire Friday night at 8 o clock heavily damaged a three room house behind a residence on Thirteenth Street in South Columbia. Mrs Lusk, inside, fled to the roof as flames spread, saved by Ed Lamar and Edwin Bullard until the fire brigade arrived. Mrs Lusk’s household belongings valued at 125 dollars were lost. an elderly negro woman known as Adnt Monday and her daughter lost all but a chair and a bed tick. The fire likely started from live coals from the stove.

In Rome Cardinal Respighi Opens Eucharistic Congress

Cardinal Respighi inaugurated the Eucharistic Congress in Rome with 6000 attendees at St. John Lateran. He spoke about preserving Christ’s last supper table and proposed global fundraising to cover expenses for unveiling the table. Father David Fleming supported Catholic nations and suggested the next congress be held in India.

Houston seeks injunction delaying Marshall County jail

P C Houston Jr of his place obtained from Judge Sam Holding of Columbia an injunction restraining the county Building Committee and contractors from further work on Marshall County jail. The order settles the ownership dispute over the lot where the jail is being built.

Heavy Shipment Of Lambs From Georgia Sat Afternoon

A heavy shipment of livestock departed Georgia Saturday afternoon with fourteen cars loaded. Houston Thomas sent one car of lambs, Milt Allen two cars, and Hagey and Hilliard three cars plus one car of cattle and sheep. Other consignors were Lewisburg parties.

Movement to organize Young Men's Christian Association in Columbia

A large audience at the Union Meeting in the Methodist Church endorsed a plan to form a Columbia YMCA. Mr. G. T. Hughes urged a wholesome space for boys with moral and business benefits, noting early subscriptions totaling 2500 dollars and a firm committee to push building plans, subscriptions, and membership.

Four teen aged girls run away toward Nauliville seeking work

Four black girls aged fourteen to seventeen attempted a runaway to Nauliville on Friday afternoon to seek employment. Their parents were alerted just before the train time and the police were called for assistance. Two girls were caught at the depot and two returned to friends' homes.

Lawyer Dismisses Contempt Charge in Court Case

Contempt proceedings against Mr. Lloyd Ceci for assault on Judge Benn Holding last November were dismissed by Judge John W. Childress. Mc Cecil's attorney Mr. G T Hughes argued the act did not violate the contempt statute, while the Attorney General urged liberal construction to cover the offense. The judge ruled the law did not apply and dismissed the case.

Four legged turkey hatched by Mr Hayes in oddity
