The Herald notes stronger demand for sheep this summer and expects a larger lamb crop next spring in the county. RL Hays reports selling four carloads of ewes and difficulties sourcing more at current prices. War years boosted profits, yet old flocks were culled, prompting restocking despite higher prices. Advertising in The Herald aided sales.
Reverend C T Wharton and wife depart for the Belgian Congo to support foreign mission work. They plan to sail from New York on July 26, travel via Paris and Lisbon to Le Moine and arrive in Belgian Congo to begin their service. Rex Orton, longtime friend, recalls childhood days in Congo and notes the Whartons follow in the footsteps of his father Dr T A Cragin, a prominent First Presbyterian missionary.
Friends report Prof E B H West passed the state bar exam in June 1916 after five months study. He will continue study to complete a few years as principal of a normal school and plans a legal career at the bar.
Reverend J W Patten of Santa Fe Maury County Baptist pastor and longtime educator has been awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree by Union University Jackson Tennessee. The honor recognizes his fifty plus years of ministry and teaching service in the county joining Reverend W T Assery as recent local recipients.
George E B McKennon, cashier of Columbia Bank & Trust Co, bought the John J Mitchell home on the Hampshire Pike near the Columbia Military Academy. The 34 acre, well improved property features modern conveniences and was bought for 10000 as an investment. An earlier error misattributed the purchase to Hiram Titcomb. The deed from Mitchell to McKennon was registered today, with the sale arranged by local agent S O Thomas.
Jesse Payne, a boy well known in Columbia, is jailed on charges of stealing a pistol from a Black man named Ross who works at C. M. A. and a suit of clothes from Charley Speed. He waived examination before Squire Alexander and awaits grand jury action.
Mrs Jamies H McGrew died recently in Shelbyville. She was well known in this city, where she had visited many times. Mrs McGrew was closely related to several prominent people formerly living in Columbus, including Mrs Weathbin.
After a long county court meeting the turnpike option committee reports progress on securing options for two pikes. One option signed likely to appeal to voters, another pending with prices due by next Saturday. Public sentiment favors ending toll roads. officials hope remaining negotiations resolve hitch before next meeting. A separate note cites a drop in crimes following liquor sale reductions with no open licenses in more than a year, boosting convictions and policing cooperation.
J P Hardison Jr five year old son of Mr and Mrs J Porter Hardison fell in the Vogue Theatre aisle Saturday night and cut his head on a theatre seat arm. The wound about six inches required several stitches and the boy was taken to Century Club parlors where doctors treated him amid a gathered crowd.
W A Webb was appointed city controller by Finance Commissioner Marshall and confirmed by the city commission in Nashville on July 20. Webb succeeds Burns in the post and takes over the fiscal oversight role for the city.
Paris Tennessee July 21 reports state Judge M M Goldstein of Henry county has resigned as county judge after an audit found a shortfall of more than 2500 dollars. The Henry county court urged resignation and ouster proceedings were started by the attorney general with a drunkenness charge pending at the current circuit court term.
Nashville July 2 Chancellor Allison told counsel he will continue to consider the application and motion for a receiver unless superseded by a higher court. George W. Stainback testified denying any stock in a company of Kindred.
Milton E. Allen was chosen as chairman and R. S. Hopkins as secretary of Maury County's new election commission. John M. Burns attended as third member. The board appointed 58 registrars, one Democrat and one Republican at each of 29 precincts. Registration opens for ten days starting August 9 with officials confident in a smooth process.
Officer Lancaster caught a dark skinned man with three chickens seized in a shed. He claimed they came from his sister, who denied knowing him and said she had not seen him in a month. He promised reform and was released.
The King’s Daughters have received over one hundred cans of fruit for the hospital and seek more to last through winter. They ask county housewives with surplus to donate. Mrs. Paul Faucett chairs the fruit-collection committee for the charity.
Miss Gladys Dooley returned from the Panama-Pacific Exposition as the Banner guest. She praises Edgar Foster business manager of the Banner for superintending the trip and says Mr Foster and his wife were attentive, meeting every guest need promptly.
Enumerators are busy compiling Maury County school census data including age groups and literacy. County Superintendent Graham prepares the annual report showing progress in education, noting consolidation, attendance challenges, and a slight rise in teacher salaries, with the full summary due in about thirty days.
The fourth quarterly conference will be held at Culleoka Methodist Church at 10 Saturday morning with Rev. W. B. Taylor as holding elder. He will preach at 11. Sunday morning Dr. Taylor preaches at Glendale and Sunday night at Cullooka Methodist Church. Full attendance is urged.
Jackson Tennessee July 21 Deputy Sheriff J G Perry and Deputies Nat Vanhook and Harrison Croom opened fire on a group of crap shooters in the Forked Deer river bottom horrifyingly sending a bullet that hit 14 year old Jones Williamson son of Mrs Mra O K Williamson in the right shoulder The shooting occurred while the group fled and the ball was removed by Dr Jere L Crook The wound is not dangerous
