Washington Jan 12 Senator Frazier introduced a bill to amend the 1890 law, declaring all intoxicating liquors transported into a state or territory subject to local police powers upon arrival. Neighbors saved some furniture, but most items were destroyed. Insurance covered the furniture for about 750 dollars, with the house insured for 1 100 dollars.
An annual report to Judge Gordon from the county work house superintendent shows inmates built miles of road in 1907. The year’s expenditures reached about 60 dollars, exceeding one thousand dollars per mile of road.
Early Sunday a blazing fire devastated the two story frame residence of Richard Wilkes at Calleoka. The origin is undetermined but the rear of the house burned rapidly, preventing the family from saving most belongings. Smoke house, servants room and other outbuildings perished, along with hogs, lard and produce. Estimated loss about 4900 dollars with 1000 dollars insured.
Early morning fire swept through Feforron City on Depot Street damaging L. A. Tren tham Bore and Jarnagin and Titts worth druggists. The blaze spread to Godwin Bros store and a fruit stand, plus Dr Titteworth’s office and the East Tennessee Telephone exchange. Total loss tied at 17 000 with insured 7 500. Godwin Bros suffered 7 000 loss. Jarnagin and Titteworth 3 000 with no insurance. Trentham 3 000 with 1 500 insured. Telephone company 800 insured fully. Other homes and stores damaged.
Savannah Ga January 13 Gen Stephen D Lee Commander in chief of the United Confederate Veterans said in an interview he opposed the proposed blue and gray reunion in Washington in 1907 He warned it could spark imprudent language and bitterness The piece notes his opposition to pensioning Confederate veterans and mentions deputies Good and Whitley pursuing two itinerant jewelers at the Guest House who escaped to Godwin station before being captured They were later brought back and paid licenses and costs.
The Herald reports CW Wilkerson named postmaster at Pukiwki and Beasley appointed postmaster at Centreville. Both Republicans endorsed by Postmaster Jackson, the district referee, signaling party influence in the federal appointments.

The fourth assistant postmaster general's December report shows 38 544 rural routes in operation served by 28 088 carriers with 726 routes tri weekly. Petitions for rural service total 56 727 with 15 448 adverse reports. There are 1 168 petitions for establishment of service pending, of which 906 remain open.
The Board of Trade will hold an open meeting in Nashville on Tuesday the 14th to discuss plans for the state industrial welfare. Delegates from the local board include J. A. Sloan, George McKennon, Andrew Dale, E P Turner, W W Evans, W J Whitthorne, W C Salmon, R J Harlan, and Horace Rainey.
Barker and Co rent the Court Square store formerly Jov Ritt and establish a branch with Lonie Barker in charge. B. Stephens rents the Court Square store recently occupied by J. N. Gant as a produce house and will use the new stand and his current dwelling for furniture and house furnishings stock. Gant to go on the road for a wholesale calendar house.
The city bought 1000 feet of first class Ore hose at $1.00 per foot and expects a three to four year life. A new motor was installed at city hall by the Water and Light Co, and the electric fire alarm system remains in good working order.
In Frankfort on January 14 the state legislature opened with no US Senate election. J C W Beckham’s bid failed on the first ballot as Brad ley Castleman Wheeler Dodd Smith Baird Kehoe and others received minor votes. Beckham’s defeat appears assured as daily ballots proceed through the session.
Nashville Tennessee January 15 Gov Patterson announced the appointment of Dr Lucius P Brown of Nashville as a state pure food and drug inspector. The position created by the last Legislature pays 2500 dollars per year and takes effect immediately.
In the Government's suit against American Tobacco Company for Sherman antitrust law violations, examination of witnesses in New York will move to Cincinnati on January 27. Counsel MacReynolds said the government will complete witness testimony in New York by week’s end.
In Marshall County Tennessee the Republican gathering endorsed Taft for president with about a hundred attendees. They backed John W. Overs as a national convention delegate and WN. W. Hale for national committee. John W. Overall urged as delegate, G. N. Tillman proposed for governor. A state prohibition law was approved. Hon A. McLane of Nashville and Col. P. CG. Smithson spoke.
