A deadly incident at a cemetery killed nine fine mares belonging to John L. Jones and Horace Hanson. Eight other horses were badly hurt with property losses approaching two thousand dollars in total. The event centers on a fatal accident with horses injured and property damage reported.
The city saw an ample melon market with wagons around the square selling watermelons canta soupes and mush melons at fair prices. Rain is hoped for to save crops and drought damage is noted. A later accident report details eight animals killed or injured at Cemetery Avenue crossing when a freight train struck a herd moved by John L. Jones Horace Hanson and others. Five brood mares two yearling colts one two year old colt and one male colt were killed valued around 160 dollars each. Several injured may die or be rendered useless.
Rev Geo H Mack reports a successful Bible Conference at Leban with about 150 delegates and visitors. The program was inspiring and weather favorable. Social features were well received and many intend to return next year. About ten attendees came from the First Church.
N. A. Norvell of the Lomeville and Nashville Railroad suffered a severe hip injury Thursday afternoon while cleaning an ash box in North yards. Norvell was under an aging engine when it moved, trapping his hip between the box and engine. He was taken to Dr. Now’s Infirmary for treatment. His home is in Nashville.
Judge Holding rendered no decision in the habeas corpus suit brought by Mrs. Belle Ingram against Peter Henson and wife for possession of a little girl. It was agreed the Hensons retain custody and provide care until a more suitable home is found. The child, about fifteen months old, attracted court observers, with unknown parentage. She was left on Judge Ferris’s Nashville doorstep as an infant and passed through Ingram to Henson before the suit.
A Maury County pavement fundraiser met in the county court room to plan street widening along the pike. W. B. Greenlaw chaired with W. D. Hastings as secretary, praising Mrs. J. C. Hardy and Mrs. Almes. Col. Hardy reported $1,726 raised, with baseball fund additions possible. bids for pavement and surveys to start, committee of six to oversee collections and contracting. Maj. W. J. Whitthorne urged railroad cooperation for a promenade and wider pike, while shading trees to create a boulevard. In weather: a long rain broke a drought, boosting crops including corn and pastures, aiding late planting and the second potato crop.
It is now an assured fact that J. C. R. Mc Call of Huntingdon will be Assistant District Attorney. District Attorney Tillman has recommended him to Attorney General Bonaparte, tantamount to an appointment.
Mrs A E Wells fractured her wrist and wrist area after a fall down stairs at the Columbian Military Academy on Friday. The injury is painful but not life threatening.
Dr. F A Holtzhausen of Wittenberg lectured on Martin Luther the Monk who shook the World at First Cumberland Presbyterian church. He called Luther the Hero of Liberty and Father of Modern Civilization, praising his role in popular education and promising another lecture at Nashville's First Presbyterian Church next Sunday morning.
Prof. Morton, Miss Mitchell, Mien McAfee, Mine Withvs and Mise Smith have returned from Knoxville where they attended the Summer School of the South for Teachers. They took the course preparing for their work at city schools in the coming session.
A historical notice reports Rev Wallace Harvey Kegel leaving Columbia after resigning from the Salvation Army post and pursuing evangelistic work and a religious paper. His whereabouts and name changes are uncertain, with ties to the First Presbyterian Church and a fallen women mission, later followed by a detective arrival.
Deputy Whitley raided a Black individuals’ crap game at Indian Camp Springs Sunday and captured four bone rollers. The Black participants were unaware of the officer’s approach until he was present, offering no resistance. Authorities said the scene suggested a larger game nearby and he also went to Brentwood, returning with two Black people charged with defeating their board hit.
Several schools in the county will open next Monday with Pigbyville starting the fall term under Miss Leota Jones and Concord beginning the term with Ming Mabel Jones as teacher.
City officials deny reports of typhoid in hydrant water after tests by Dr. P. D. Biddle and FP G. Smith show hydrant samples contain organic matter but no disease germs. Burns spring water is pure. cleaning of the Duck River reservoir will proceed when conditions permit, with ongoing river and intake filter analyses and checks along Duck River banks for potential contamination sources.
Gen Harvey H Hannah, member of the Tennessee Railroad Commission and noted orator, has accepted an invitation to address the Woman's Department at the formal opening of the Maury county fair. The event is set for Tuesday Sept 16 at 11 o'clock in the Plural Fall, and is expected to draw a large audience.
