At the first meeting under new chair Louis Tong the Cedar Civ Electric Utilities Board outlined forming questions for a public opinion poll to be mailed with July water bills. Pete Paris of California Pacific Utilities offered PR staff help and SUSC pollsters were invited. A publicity committee was appointed to inform the public about data gathered and the board prepared a summary of findings for a public meeting with the JavCees and Chamber of Commerce.

Riots in Soweto Turn Violent With Police Firefights
Rioting in Soweto and downtown Johannesburg escalated as police used teargas cannisters in a schoolyard driving students away. One teenager was killed by police fire, a runaway truck crushed two children, and fourteen youths were wounded. Police arrested 176 as clashes marked the worst rioting this year. Students accused the gas attack of being staged for a TV crew.
