Bush wins second term with Placer County turnout surge

Placer County voters backed George W. Bush by 62.23 percent while California delivered 55 electoral votes to John Kerry. Nationally Bush captured 51.4 percent and 279 electoral votes as turnout reached 74.56 percent locally. Absentee and provisional ballots remain to be counted, possibly raising turnout above recalls. Colfax unopposed for local seats. Jim Albright to join City Council on Dec. 7 replacing Brian West.

Colfax considers new off sale liquor license request

Colfax residents express concern about a proposed off sale liquor license for 22 W Grass Valley Street. Robert Townsend seeks a Colfax business permit to offer wine and designer spirits at closer to wholesale pricing, with Townsend's spokesperson arguing lower traffic than typical liquor stores.

Blocked Crossings and Whistles at Weimar Colfax Council

At the October 27 meeting of the Weimar Applegate Colfax Municipal Advisory Council, officials from Union Pacific Railroad and the Federal Railroad Administration discussed blocked railroad crossings and train whistle concerns. The California Public Utilities Commission governs blocking times under General Order No 135, prohibiting crossings blocked longer than 10 minutes. Citizens should record the crossing ID from the Department of Transportation, date and time, and any train car number if blocked. See TRAINS, page 12.

Weimar Hills Dives Into Democracy Mock Election

Weimar Hills School conducted a statewide style mock election for eighth graders on Oct 28 as part of a campaign to teach suffrage. Students registered to vote learned about candidates and propositions then reported back to inform peers. Results showed Bush re-election with 111 to 32, Boxer ahead of Jones, Prop 61 and 62 approved, Prop 60 defeated.

Colfax Fire Department At Work On Christmas Tree Upgrade

Colfax Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Nick Baumgardner removes old lights from the Colfax Christmas Tree on Main Street as the department updates decorations. Sister Tina Greenwood thanks the community for ongoing support while donations to fund the upgrades are welcomed at City Hall or by mail with notes. For more information call 346-2323.
