Placer Hills Fire Protection District voters approved Measure F by 1 455 to 676, costing homeowners about 49 a year to raise firefighter wages about 25 percent and add two paramedics. Measure G passed 70.3 percent to permit spending over four years. Turnout was 32.13 percent with 2 132 of 6 635 ballots cast.
More than 900 attendees watched 213 graduates receive diplomas on Robert O. Marson Field at 10 a.m. last Saturday. Senior class president Katie Root and Thomas Fulenwider were named valedictorians. Principal Rick Spears highlighted achievements and memories as the choir performed You Raise Me Up.
After months of planning a two day Fourth of July celebration, the Chamber of Commerce voted to hold a one day event on Sunday July 4 2004. Insurance costs forced the change with estimates around 5000 dollars. Security costs could range from 3500 to 5800 with three CHP officers aiding. The chamber has about 12300 dollars raised and hopes to net another 1000 to 2000 dollars, while total expenses could reach 20000 dollars.
Sierra Energy of Colfax partnered with ChevronTexaco to host North America’s only full motion mobile truck simulator at Sierra Nevada Tire and Wheel store. The $2 million unit, mounted on a truck, aims to cut fleet costs via realistic training and driving modules.
Colfax Battalion Chief Jeff Brand of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection notes a heavier than normal fire season with a graph showing acres burned roughly six times the five year average since January. He says over half of fires result from debris burn escapes and cites vegetation fuels as a key factor.
Brand notes this season is 6 to 8 weeks ahead of normal with high debris fire risk. Factors include reduced rainfall despite early heavy rains, unseasonably high spring temperatures, and strong winds. Strong winds elevate escape fire danger across burned areas.
