Dutch Flat Fourth Parade Goes Around Town Twice

Dutch Flat hosts a Sunday Fourth of July parade sponsored by the Dutch Flat Community Center with CHP leading and Abe Khamis as grand marshal. The theme is neighbors helping neighbors and a crowd enjoys water spraying, games, a dunk tank, and a well received strawberry festival and salad luncheon while one fire engine stands by off-route.

Fourth of July bonfire burns two acres near Dutch Flat

A fire reported at 8 26 a m Sunday morning off Lowell Hill Road near the Dutch Flat Diggins burned about two acres. It was immediately controlled and completely extinguished by Monday morning. Three engines, one hand crew and two water tenders, totaling about 30 personnel, responded to the scene.

Mount Howell lookout tower staffing under new agreement

A cooperative staffing agreement between the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the Bureau of Land Management makes Mount Howell lookout tower staffed starting July 6. BLM funds personnel and operations while CDF owns and operates the tower. Regular hours are 9 am to 7 pm with added coverage at dawn and dusk during red flag alerts. Nick Baumgardner, Colfax City volunteer firefighter, currently staffs the tower with a second firefighter to be hired soon. The tower covers both federal and state land.

Colfax Elementary teacher killed in Alaska crash

Nevada City resident Zoe Kreizenbeck 49 died in a head on collision on the Sterling Highway near Ninilchik Alaska while on a salmon trip. Kevil Pelton 52 was uninjured as a passenger in Kreizenbeck’s Nissan. Kreizenbeck taught grades seven and eight social science at Colfax Elementary and was set to return next year.

Fellow educator Zoe Kreizenbeck remembered for generosity

Special to the Record mourns Zoe Kreizenbeck a longtime Colfax Elementary School educator who died July 3 2004 in a three car collision while traveling toward Seward Alaska to fish for salmon. For 16 years she taught grades 8 6 and 4 guiding and inspiring her students who called her kids. Memory page 10.
