Memorial service scheduled for Colfax Record editor Tom Homer

A. Thomas Homer Jr., longtime Colfax Record editor and community figure, died of a heart attack last weekend in the newspaper office. He was found Monday morning after a janitor noted he appeared ill the day before. The coroner confirmed death. Homer had fallen and cut his head during the incident. A community gathering at Giovanni's reflected on his impact, with colleagues praising his leadership, open mind, and photography. Born May 7, 1943 in Island Park Michigan, he lived in South Field and had edited the Colfax Record for four years, earning multiple California Newspaper Publishers awards.

Homer recalled as community fixture

Flowers outside the Colfax Record office marked the passing of editor Tom Homer a beloved local journalist. His death drew wide sorrow as colleagues and readers mourned the man who covered every hour from dawn to night, earning trust across law enforcement and the community.

Four held for armed robbery in Placer County

Four Stockton men were held in Placer County jail with $50,000 bail each after an armed robbery at a Canyon Way Tesoro gas station on March 25. Deputies pursued and detained the suspects near Flyers Gas Station on Bowman Road in Auburn. Deshawn Franklin, 18. Frank Green, 20. Gerald Harris, 19. and Tony Randle, 19, were booked on suspicion of armed robbery and conspiracy and face a court appearance on April 5. Cory Fisher and Penne Usher are mentioned.

Nature program offers bird facts at Placer Nature Center

Placer Nature Center in Auburn hosts a free open house on Saturday April 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Staff naturalist Chuck Wiederhold and docent Meredith Worley will teach visitors how to use field guides and binoculars for birding. Visitors may bring or borrow binoculars to view birds along the trails. Nests, eggs, and birds are displayed inside the exhibit hall.

Colfax High School photography teacher inspires students

Colfax High School instructor Rick Brown has taught photography photojournalism and yearbook for 27 years. His journalism class creates Verve magazine and the Falcon Free Press. Fellow teacher Wade Wolff helped create a program where students certify in layout writing photography design web interviewing before joining the staff. Andrea Onstot wrote an award winning editorial in a youth on the spot contest. A student display organized by Sarah Helmers runs April 9 through May at Auburn Faith Hospital. Former student Tristan McElhany praises Brown for building communication skills and care for student well being. Julianne Balmain, once Brown’s student, recalled him as her first editor and inspiration to write. Brown’s Cuba trip with brothers occurred in March 2001.
