Richard McMinn died in Kemmerer after pneumonia. He had served as County Sheriff for three years and was respected for his diligent, kind, and practical approach. Cokeville residents planned to attend the funeral and lay him to rest as a beloved local figure.
The regular services led by Rev. Morten Jos lin of Romreere will be postponed this week. He says services will be held at St Bartholomews at eight P M on Sunday June 16.
Frank H. Barrow has resigned his eight year role as private secretary to Con-Mondell and plans to return to Wyoming around the first of July. Barrow, formerly editor of the Sheridan Post, may reenter the newspaper field.
The report notes local donations to the Red Cross with workers earning about ten dollars each and totals growing from 125 to 225 dollars due to scattered locations and generous support. Several employees in the area contributed grants of 810 per person as part of the drive.
The Kemmerer Republican reports Opal mayor and hotel proprietor William Solliday faced issues after erecting lambing quarters for his flock. He realized a permit for allowing ewes to consort with rams during winter was missing, leaving the operation in doubt as the flock ignored the new quarters.
In Kemmerer a diligent clerk serves as chief clerk of the draft board, organizing forms, transportation, and details for recruits. Working with Dr. E. Stafford H. Harrison and Sheriff J. R. McMinn, the county has sent 152 men since May, with 44th Engineer Corps to Fort Benjamin Harrison, 42 to Camp Lewis, and 85 to Fort Logan, meeting the quota.
Veteran wool buyer Jesse Goodfellow, a 92 year veteran of Eisemann Bros of Boston, reports a new haul of nearly half a million pounds. He predicts prices of 0.65 to 0.70 per pound and calls this one of the most profitable years for sheep raisers in the Intermountain country.
A Washington Times writer laments 1200 papers killed by high paper costs and wartime government campaigns. He notes publishers fed up with war economy drives while facing a postal rate increase that may quadruple the cost of paper.
The P. W. Olson shearing pens at the head of Snowhallow closed for the season on Tuesday. A machine plant operated by ten shearers will lay off about 70 000 pounds of wool from Olson's flocks, with corrals well placed for easy access to the sheep range.
Mr and Mrs Victor Forgeon departed Cokeville this week to join their sons and daughters in Burley Idaho. They moved after a long history in Cokeville dating to the late 1870s when the settlement was a sagebrush patch. He built a ranching and sheep-raising life and leaves many friends who regret their departure.
A small flock of sheep on the right of way at Pegram last week derailed a regular freight train and caused major disruption. All sixteen sheep were killed in the incident.
On Wednesday this week June Sth Cokeville held its second draft registration at the post office listing the boys. Twenty three were registered in the district nearly doubling the expected number of eligible youths.
A Cokeville resident was brought into court on a careless driving charge for ignoring a town sign at a street intersection. It was his final offense. he received a two dollar fine and five dollars in advice. Ordinances governing motor vehicle operation within Cokeville limits will be strictly enforced.
The Wyoming Red Cross chapter reports state leadership has won the pennant for the December Red Cross Christmas seals campaign. National data show Wyoming at 7.2 seals per capita, far ahead of Arizona 4.1, Minnesota 4.6, and Connecticut 3.4, with over 160 million seals sold nationwide, up 50 percent from 1916.
From the Corn Belt, Walter Lake of Melody Bros. meets old friends and new customers in South Omaha. He notes spring planting in the corn belt progressing well after five days of rain, corn conditions are excellent, grass is catching up, and fall prices for feeders may hold or ease slightly if crops stay good.
Two honor men from the convict camp in Salt Canyon escaped last week to an unknown destination. Captain Bryan of the state prison visited Cokeville. Pictures of the two are distributed and a reward of 650.00 offered for each. J. M. Shelby, 58, from Converse County for larceny, and Sid Taylor, 60, from Converse County for burglary, are at large and believed to be together.
The Short Line altered arrivals and departures for East Bound trains No 4 No 6 and No 18 plus West Bound No 6 No 17 and No 10. Mail handling also changed. Mall now carried on all trains except No 4.
