In 1946 Cobram Courier commentary warns that rocket bomb experiments in Central Australia threaten aborigines. It argues Western civilisation brings vice and death to native populations, recalling colonial violence while contrasting perceived intelligence with the Stone Age.
At St Margaret's Church Cobram a welcome home service on Sunday October 29 honored returned personnel. The full church sang old hymns as Mr Petering Numurkah played the solo The Lord is My Light with Mrs S Gregory at the organ. The Rev L Rose spoke on Brotherhood and gratitude to service members over six years. Presentations were made to Betty Bassett-Smith Barbara Bassett-Smith Alan Galard Ken Markey Oscar Weatherill with Book of Common Prayer.
Cobram’s quotas cap at £5000 from 40 subscribers. Intending subscribers are reminded of the loan closing date for both cash and conversion options.
Joy Shenard second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T P Shenard Cobram wed Clem Hudson son of Mr. and Mrs. E G Hudson Subiaco at Scot's Church Collins Street Melbourne. Rev John Alexandra officiated with organist Mr W Davis. Attendants included bridesmaid Miss Dorothy Shepard and best man Mr A Houston. Reception at Wentworth.
Cobram III traveled to Strathmerton and won on the first innings by 53 runs. Cobram scored 124 with Crozier 27 and Bannan 32 contributing, the opening partnership reaching 50 before Len Reynoldson bowled with A Brent among the notable dismissals.
The Cobram Cricket Club report highlights Strathmerton’s batsmen and young bowler I O’Brien with 18 runs, Monckton taking 4 for 19, and a schoolboy bowler praised. It notes Mrs F Schier as official scorer and calls for an umpire of equal ability to ease captain and secretary.
Aubre Denson celebrated turning 21 at their Cobram home Sylva den with a scavenger hunt and many games. Guests enjoyed a sumptuous supper, a gold key gift from the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission staff, and tributes from Mr. H C Kermode and Mr. J H Arnott before candles were blown out on the cake. Mary Cassidy also received a birthday present during the festivities.
Miss Noreen Hickey of Katandra West has begun work at Kew Lonergans garage in Cobram. Emily Jean Powell and Rees Douglas Guthrie exchange nuptial plans. Mr. Frank Coigan and his son Thomas visit Cobram as A Bourke of Toorak holiday with relatives. Bourke family returns from Syd and Sirs Breaden travels to Sydney for holidays. Mrs F Harris of High Street returns from a month’s holiday in Sydney.
