Post J.O. Plan Draws Woolgrower Debate in Victoria

In a widely published letter Francis R. Howell claims opponents of the Post J.O. Wool Scheme are influenced by the buying trade and financial houses. He argues the plan is government controlled under the label of protection. Charles C. Kelly, president of the Graziers Association of Victoria, counters that government control risks losing grower marketing power and praises R. D. Bakewell for his stance against entrenched governmental intrusion.

Two Priests Ordained At Shepparton

In St. Brendan's Church Shepparton Bishop Bernard Stewart ordained two Goulburn Valley residents Patrick Farrell and Francis Hickey to the priesthood. The ceremony drew six hundred parishioners from Shepparton Numurkah Rushworth and Nagambie with local officials in attendance.

Death of Mr N J O Sullivan at Castlemaine

Gladys Downie Wins Again In Cobram Week End Races

Gladys Downie wins three club races at Cobram weekend meets in cold wet conditions. She conquers a four minute start over five miles, overtaking Marlene Johnson near the finish to win by ten lengths. Noelene Day follows. Val Milstead did not start. Junior races see Colin Cornish and Frank Goodman renew their rivalry with Colin ahead. John Haw, age 13, impresses among older boys.

Bob Shadforth Wins 20-Miler In Slow Senior Race

In a slow massed start around Strathmerton Cobram course conditions were poor and riders held back. Bob Shadforth surged at 300 yards to win the A Grade sprint, while Frank Zeromski edged George Stewart in the B Grade. other results include Ladies 5-Mile Handicap and Junior 3-Mile Scratch.

Cobram Barooga Golf Day Results and Ladies Event

The Cobram Barooga club hosted a handicap match last Saturday with C Walsh winning 2 up over Sogey. Canadian foursomes on Sunday were led by Bowie Walsh at 64 nets, and Cobram Barooga hosted a successful Ladies Day with Mrs J Day winning 18 Holes Handicap and Yarrawonga team taking the Teams Event.

Greenwich Time Ball Marks Festival of Britain Opening

The time ball at Greenwich Observatory dropped at noon on May 3 to symbolize the Festival of Britain. Since 1833 the ball rose and dropped in stages to allow Thames pilots and dockyard officials to set their chronometers. now it will drop at noon instead of one o’clock, continuing the long-standing observatory tradition despite wartime evacuations.
