A Sunday blaze at 2 50 p m destroyed the home of Mr and Mrs L G Hamilton leaving little chance of saving the Cobram residence. The fire spread rapidly, likely starting in the ceiling from an electrical short. The house, initially an historic post office built about sixty years ago, was uninsured. The couple had prior losses.
The Cobram Fire Brigade thanks Mr C Thompson and Mr W Rutherford for their rapid actions Sunday. Rutherford cut electric supply and Thompson pumped directly into the town main. The letter warns the public against untrained interference at fires and notes the brigade is now full strength and insured, urging safety for all.
Lord Beaverbrook argues that Britain and the Dominions must unite under the Empire with Imperial Preference to secure stable markets. He stresses cooperation in foreign affairs and defense, urging action to sustain imperial greatness and global trade, and warns against neglect of the Empire’s heritage.
Victorian fruit canneries need 100 volunteer women and girls for the apricot crop as 600 workers are already employed. Despite damage from the Rutherglen Bug, output may match last year’s 101,769 cases, with peak labor needed mid January and more to follow. Last year’s pears total 532,694 cases and peaches 1,030,094. Australia’s peach total was 1,292,670. Canners urge women and girls to contact the local employment officer for vouchers and details.
