A funeral notice recalls a mother who died January 15 1950 and a wife and mother honored by her family. The note thanks doctors Matron and nursing staff of Cobram District Hospital for care during illness. Names include Nell Bill Anders GEAY Lindsay and Mr J Sperling.
Sympathy pours out for Mrs. Moncrieff and family after her sudden passing on Saturday leaving a day old daughter. The notice lists many Cobram residents and visitors from Melbourne Sydney Benalla and nearby towns attending services and holiday gatherings. An obituary is promised in the next issue.
Revels at Punt Road feature a well attended New Year Eve service and sacred concert led by the Highland Band with fireworks. A mock court show and burlesque brass bands provided comic entertainment, ending with Auld Lang Syne at midnight.
On Tuesday December 26 visitors toured about twenty miles around the Soldier Settlement area. They met My W. West who spoke on development since settlement began in April 1947. The group viewed the milking shed and its electric motor powered machines. Members from Werrinee irrigation district were impressed by progress on sixty forms. Dr M D O'Dwyer thanked Mr and Mrs Stewart Mr West and the Council of the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture for arranging the tour conducted by R Dunne district engineer S Rivers and Water Supply Commission.
The Minister for Commerce and Agriculture Mr McEwen announced approval of a recommendation to raise payments to hide suppliers by 150 percent of appraised values. This yields an immediate 5 percent increase and applies to all hides the board purchases from Monday, December 18.
Mr JD Githrig secretary of the Citrus Growers Association and Mr J BR Hume district engineer hosted a tour starting at Cobram and visiting S M Scott Seppelt Seapelt vineyards and Rositer citrus groves. Visitors observed irrigation pumps packing sheds and mechanical harvest aids and returned at 5 pm after a pleasant afternoon.
A 19 month old child, son of Mr and Mrs Chamberlain, died in Cobram Hospital after ingesting kerosene while visiting relatives on Soldier Settlement land. He had been treated for the poisoning but succumbed to pneumonia later that night.
