Danville notes detail visits from Terre Haute and Seymour residents, a cottage trip to Long Lake, a hospital discharge, a move of the McConnelly Shoe Stock, and local people traveling to Eaton Ohio and Chicago. A marriage license list and lawsuits are recorded alongside a charity play by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Sons of Veterans.
Fifteen youths from Coatesville and nearby areas were drafted from the registry of six ty men, with selected individuals listed by number and name. They will face exemption board review in order of their registration numbers, after a mistaken initial listing shifted one name to a North Salem recipient.
Clem Rumley of Amo earned his first dollar during the Civil War era a yellow coin linked to early service. Born in 1840 in Washington county he survived multiple horse accidents and still works, plowing twenty acres in eleven and a half hours with two teams. He spent the coin benevolently seeds and ship provisions to his brothers in Nashville whose food arrived spoiled in transit. His name is etched with other workmen on Nathan Hadley’s brick house south of Hadley.
The Friday club gathered at Mrs Roy Hodson home on July 20 with nine members attending. Members discussed Red Cross work and chose to retain current officers except for leadership, naming Mrs G W Bryant as leader and Mrs M F Bennett as assistant. Sitting and Sleeping in the Open Air offers tips on economical sleeping porches. Both pamphlets are free upon request from the Indiana Society at 210 Public Savings Insurance Building, Indianapolis.
Nancy M Hunt widow of Aimrt Slunt will hold a public sale at the Charley Elrod farm one half mile west of Coatesville on Saturday July 28 at 1 pm. Items include three head horses six head cattle eight head hogs 40 to 50 bushes good corn agricultural implements household goods and other articles. The Indiana Council of Defence and county councils push food conservation, coal production, and soldier support. Activities include recruiting workers, educating farmers, and listing professional volunteers while counties approve funds for admin needs and room space.
The Waynetown chautauqua closed with good crowds and interest. A Cloverdale stallion valued at 1200 was lost without insurance. A cyclone caused damage to Cloverdale. 22 residents reported losses. Local business and farming news include corn sales at 1.75 a bushel and 4000 pounds of wool shipped from Cloverdale. Also noted are personnel moves at banks and several injuries and a fatal fire in Brazil.
