Sunday visits and travels framed a busy period in Danville with Carr ie Jackson at Clayton, relatives from Lebanon Indiana and Indianapolis calling or traveling. Local residents attended a public Eastern Lodge installation while court notices list several foreclosure and divorce actions.
State Geologist Barrett says prospects near Coatesville are as good as Bainbridge and possibly shallower at 1,500 feet. He notes similarities to Southeastern Illinois rock and urges locals to fund or hire an experienced driller to test the area between Coatesville and Stilesville. Public action could boost the town’s prominence.
Coatesville starts a Sunday afternoon lecture course after Chas Edward Gambold secured a guarantee and signatures from about fifty citizens. A guarantors meeting chose officers Trev rank Brown as president C D Knight secretary and G W Bryant treasurer with committees for music speakers and advertising. A speaker is planned each Sunday afternoon throughout the winter with a likely first event on the 26th.
W H Gibbens Kansas City parole officer files annual report showing 1830 cases managed in year. Parole calls 937, investigations 385, jobs secured 85 for youths 83 for married men, juvenile cases 40, domestic matters settled out of court 49, parole violators sent back to farm 19, admonishments 8, spousal warnings 5, county court cases of homeless elderly 16, hospital visits 3, private charity 62, young women 3.
Mrs Hughes who teaches a Bible class for women at the M Kck Church entertained 24 to 40 ladies Monday night at her home for guest Miss Agnes Thanks. Mrs Roscoe Todd played violin with Miss Mary Hunt at the piano as charades followed social hour. The evening included a playful drawing game and a lively Gutsy-pulling close to the gathering.
A H S defeated Danville High School 31 to 13 in a closely watched Friday game, keeping pace with New Winchester for the county title. Meek, Hastings, Dawson lead scoring as Danville suffers disputed calls and field goals by Hastings, Stuart, Brown.
Denhoff North Dakota letter reports Sam teaching in Sheridan County fourteen miles north of Denhoff with twenty four pupils and six grades. He notes Germans and Norwegians predominance, limited English among students, weekly mail three times a week, and plans to return home after fourteen weeks. He mentions mild fall and winter, fear of blizzards, and seeing Mellville Menage, with Herald subscription and New Year wishes dated January 3, 1924.
In a January 5, 1914 letter from Bakersfield California Theodore Scofield informs about former townsman Baila Herod. He mentions Herod enjoys life there with his two sons and daughter and shares a Christmas family reunion contrasting roses with snow. The note thanks Coatesville for kindness during his stay and asks for timely subscription delivery. Scofield is Herod’s son in law.
The Present Day Club met on January 8 with Mrs. Roy Hodson presiding. Roll call responses centered on Colonial Life and Customs. Mrs. Gambold led the history lesson and Mrs. Campbell reviewed Early American Firesides and Tame Life. A reading, On the Ruins of a Country Inn, was presented by Mrs. Brown. Refreshments followed. Mrs. Amanda Dean of Stilesville returned home after a week with her brother A. J. Burks.
The Rev C O Smock preached on prayer’s power and mind over matter, citing cases where prayer aided healing after medical failure. He denounced Dowism as fraudulent except in rare cases, recalled a tuberculosis case in Zion City, and criticized Christian Science’s limits in healing. He tied his sermon to Christ’s commission to heal the sick.
W F M S met at Mrs. Wmn Davis home on Jan 6 with fourteen members. Devotional by Mrs. Harrison Shields and program topics included Important Pacts and Beginnings of the Work. Social hour refresh ments. February gathering set for Mrs. Flora Masten. Homer Tyre’s infant son near Groveland died after surgery and was buried at Lebanon.
The Indiana state fire marshal endorses and will enforce new school building rules from the state board of health. They require fire proof boiler rooms, exterior opening doors, outward hinged exits, no smoke pipes through walls, and avoidance of locating heat sources beneath entrances or stairs. The aim is to protect 500000 schoolchildren with stricter construction standards.
An appreciative crowd at the Methodist Church heard Cartoonist Marion Ballou Fisk last Thursday. She drew with precision on memories of her Vermont home and childhood, sharing wit and uplifting tales that moved the audience. The program continues February 3 with MacInnes Neilson.
Miss Floy Christy daughter of Monroe and Alice Christy aged 18 months died at her Reno home Monday at 8 am after a fall and typhoid fever which led to consumption. Funeral held at her Reno home Wednesday at 10 am with burial in Musten cemetery south of Coatesville.
A. A. Surber is new Pittsboro town board president while Joseph Prewitt and John Page take leadership roles in Plainfield and North Salem. Several local figures mourn death of Dr. J G Kennedy aged 88 and Thomas Forshee aged 59. Diphtheria closes Brownsburg schools as town residents report illnesses and travel notes from Florida and New York.
A visitor from a distant pulpit sits in the parlor awaiting dinner when a little girl climbs onto his knee and declares she knew he would come home with mamma for dinner. The preacher asks how she knew. She giggles that a chicken told her, a joke that lightens the gathering.
At a stockholders meeting on January 12 1914 in the bank room the Citizens State Bank Stilesville Indiana elected directors B W Anderson Frank Arnold Chas W Robards John E Hicks Elmer Stantey Ivaty F Ruark and E H Anderson. Active officers chosen by the directors include John BE A as President Chas Wy Robards as Vice President and Cliggtar G Pike as cashier.
