ALCW Board Meets at Norse with Austin Leader

Dan Amundson of Clifton received the Lone Star Farmer honor at the Area VIII Gold Key Awards Banquet in Waco. The ceremony recognized his work with junior livestock exhibitors at the Central Texas Fair and youth support in the area, with several other Area VIII members also receiving awards or honors. Walter Prescher Jr. was introduced as an American Farmer award recipient to be honored at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.

Walter Prescher Jr Undergoes Knee Surgery At Local Clinic
Walter Prescher Jr. underwent knee surgery at Goodall and Witcher Clinic Hospital on Saturday morning August 26 and is recovering. He injured his knee during high school. He had returned home from the Sons of Hermann Youth Camp at Comfort on Wednesday night August 23 where he served since May 29 as assistant camp manager. The camp ran June 5 with six weeks for girls and five for boys, and about 989 boys and girls attended.

Labor Day Holiday Observed in Clifton
Clifton marks Labor Day with most stores closed Monday September 4 and schools taking a holiday before resuming Tuesday. The Texas Highway Department driver’s license rep Jerry Fette announced he will be away in Meridian Monday. Courthouse offices are expected to close for the holiday.

CHS Band Will Not March At Hillsboro
Clifton High School will not march at half time during Fridays game in Hillsboro due to a late practice start from the new band hall completion. The band will still perform in the stands with about 56 members reported and more expected as school starts. Band Parents Association held its first meeting at the new band hall and set committees and fees for uniforms and membership. Mrs. Ross Helton had surgery Tuesday and is hoped to recover soon.

The Clifton school board authorized a five cent per hundred valuation tax hike for 1961 62 raising the rate from 1.40 to 1.45. The budget will be the largest for operations due to over 28 000 yearly rise in teachers pay and other costs. The board also approved small raises for substitute workers and accepted lower bids for milk and gasoline. A central furnace counterflow heater will be installed in remaining classrooms. The Clifton Valley Mills game was set for 7 00 PM while Itasca's request to play on Saturday was denied.

Thursday morning prices show eggs at 35c a dozen for large A, 25c for medium and B large, and 14c for chicks. Cream at 40c per pound. Grains range from 64c per bushel for oats to 82c for barley and 1.80 for milling wheat. About 560 cattle received. top slaughter steers 22 to 24, stocker calves 25 to 28, cows 14 to 16 plus cows and calves 165 to 220. Hog tops 18.50 to 18.75. lamb tops 15.00.
