The State Highway and Public Transportation Commission let a highway contract in October for Coryell and Bosque counties. Odell Geer Construction Company of Harker Heights won with a low bid of 494208.87. An early morning blaze at 1113 West 13th Street on October 20 nearly leveled the home. No injuries occurred as Clifton Volunteer Fire Department units, about 20 firemen, fought the fire. Interior and furnishings were destroyed. only the exterior frame remained. Meridian Volunteer Fire Department aided CVFD Saturday evening in the building fire response.

Break-in at Lumpkins reports theft of change and pistol
Police Chief Alvin James reported a break-in at Lumpkins West 5th Street. Entry was through a back door and about $20 in change along with a .22 pistol were stolen. Arrests followed for an adult male from Wharton County on October 19 with eight bad check warrants.
