Austin, Oct. 22 Portraits of seven early Texas settlers have been presented to the University of Texas Library by Miss Barbara Grace of Hempstead per archivist Mrs. Mattie Austin Hatcher. The portraits include Barbara Calvit and Frederick Calvit, John Hunter Herndon and Barbara Mackall Calvit Herndon, Leonard Waller Groce and his wife Courtney Ann Fulton Groce, and Leonard Waller Groce III. The families are linked through intermarriages among the Calvits, Herndons, and Groces. The Calvit line arrived with Stephen F. Austin in 1825. John Hunter Herndon began practicing law in 1837. the Groces were early Texas settlers.
Mosheim Methodist Church invites all members of the Mosheim Charge to a final rally on Thursday night October 30 at Lane's Chapel. Presiding Elder and four district preachers will attend with special music and sermons. A brief adjourned session of the Fourth Quarterly Conference will follow. Obituary recounts the life of Marie C. Swenson born in 1837 in Arendahl Norway. Her family immigrated in 1852, pioneering Iowa settler life amid Indian threats. She married Neal Swenson, endured Civil War hardships, and lived a Christian life in Dallas and Clarke Counties. She died October 15 with services at Trinity Lutheran Church conducted by Reverends Roe and Thorson, survived by three children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Members of the Woman's Missionary Society of the Methodist Church were entertained at Mrs. H. T. Grantham's home with an engaging program led by Mrs. Joe Helton. Hymn 85 was sung and a report on social service statistics given by Mrs. Jno. H. Neel. Topics covered world mindedness in homes, interracial attitudes, and the need for parents to engage in learning, with multiple speakers including Mrs. L. L. Vickers, Miss Mary Ellison, Mrs. W. B. Stewart, Mrs. W. T. Boulware, and Mrs. Lenoir Kornegay. devotional readings and the Golden Rule were included before a concluding prayer. A sandwich course with hot chocolate, chips, and cake was served. Reporter.
