U S Army Engineers Detail Whitney Dam Flood Shield
The 1955 Whitney Dam and Lake Whitney prevented flood damages valued at 1.75 million dollars. The project held back over 103000 acre feet of flood waters and cut the Waco crest by about 12 feet, later again reducing the crest by about 20 feet as floods surged. The era’s peak level reached 527.65 feet enabling 138000 acre feet of flood storage, underscoring the dam as the Brazos basin safety valve and a Corps of Engineers project.
