Clifton High School counselor Mrs. Homer Spence announces James A. Petrich as a National Merit Semifinalist for 1968 69. Semifinalists are among the nation’s top high school seniors and can compete for about 3 000 scholarships. Finalists are chosen from this group. winners may receive up to 1 500 yearly four year merit awards and 1 000 stipends on college enrollment.
Clifton High School students will watch a two part driving safety demonstration at 9 00 a m on October 4 1968. Ben Bullard and Kent Appleby of the Texas Farm Bureau oversee a car mounted paint bullet system to show stopping distances at 20 30 and 40 mph with police officers as drivers. The event aims to raise highway safety awareness and is sponsored by the Bosque County Farm Bureau.
Clifton's Jr. High Cubs defeated Grandview Junior Zebras 28-8 on Tuesday night. Marvin Grelle ran for two TDs, D P Canuteson added one TD and two extra points, with Canuteson and teammates Crawford Grimland Symank delivering solid defense. The win marks the Cubs' second victory with Valley Mills having fallen 38-8 last week and Whitney rescheduled to Monday night, Oct. 7.
The state sales tax rose by one percent to four percent total with the city tax, effective Wednesday. Purchases as low as 13 cents now incur tax, while higher amounts are computed at four percent for ease of cashiering. Clifton offers free charts at City Hall for local stores.
The American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary meet at 6 30 p m Saturday Oct 5 for a hamburger supper hosted by Selmer Erickson Post 322 Clifton. All members and families invited and refreshments will be served.
Clifton resident Bonnie June Standefer earned the Dallas Model Coed title after being chosen from 750 applicants at the Dallas News finishing touches modeling school. A full page color photo appeared in the Dallas Morning News as the state fair opening promo image.
Clifton's Cubs Varsity prepared through tough practice after a defeat to Groesbeck. They face the Hamilton Bulldogs in Hamilton at 8 p.m. with key players either returning from injury or gaining form. Tickets not sold in Clifton. gate sales only.
A 77 year old Meridian man moved from fair to serious condition at Hillcrest hospital after a two vehicle crash in Meridian Monday. Charlie Otto Sepert was driving a 1950 Chevrolet that collided with a 1968 Ford pickup pulling a loaded stock trailer at State Highway 174 and F Street. Melvin Carl Dahn, 41, of Cleburne, was the pickup driver and not hurt. The crash occurred at 1 10 p.m. Monday when Sepert failed to yield during a left turn. Damage was estimated at 1000 dollars to the truck and 100 dollars to the other vehicle.
Mike Young of 1012 Mary Street Clifton was treated for arm burns after gasoline fumes ignited by a pilot light in a garage hot water heater. Clifton Fire Dept arrived with two trucks and extinguished the blaze with no property damage. Young was taken to Goodall Witcher Hospital. Authorities urged sightseers to yield to emergency vehicles to allow firefighters swift access.
Clifton's B-Squad Cubs beat the Mariners 18 9 on Thursday night to move to 1 1 and host Midway at Cub Stadium at 7 30 p m tonight. George Nelson scored on a 40 yard run and Jim Knudson and Wayne Dryer added touchdowns. two extra points failed and a safety counted for two points.
