Meat department key to supermarket profits says expert
Meat plays a vital role in overall supermarket profits though margins are higher on other items. Dr. William Vastine of Texas A&M warns meat departments often break even or lose money, yet they drive customer perception and total store sales. He notes about 85 percent of meat is sold in supermarkets and meat contributes around 2 percent of total store sales, 35 percent of food sales, influencing the store image and potential success or failure. Prices rise from marketing costs and competition, pushing retailers to boost sales and cut costs, with beef likely to gain importance in coming months.

It also references the US Employment Service as a key source of unemployment information and ends with an exhortation to attend the church of one’s choice.
