Dahl Trophy Golf Opens May 30 at Clifton’s Club

Clifton's Golf Club announces the Dahl Trophy tournament starts Memorial Day May 30 and runs through June as a handicap 54 hole event. Local members receive handicaps from 4 to 21 at a Tuesday meeting led by President E E Stewart with dues through June required for cup eligibility.

Gilmore Named Llano Head Coach and Teacher

Raymond Gilmore, longtime Clifton High School Cubs line coach, accepted the head football coach post at Llano High School on May 22. Mrs. Gilmore will teach in Llano, having served as a sixth grade teacher in Clifton for three years. Clifton friends express regret at their departure and wish them success.

VFW District 14 Convention Held In Clifton May 24 25

About 175 delegates and visitors from 16 VFW Posts in District 14 attended the spring convention at Robert E. Binford Post 8553 in Clifton May 24 and 25. Judge Frank G. McDonald spoke on Americanism and community service. Helen Aars discussed community service projects. A barbecued chicken dinner was served Sunday noon. District officers were elected with Truett Thomason named District Commander and Carl Schmidt Senior Vice Commander among others. Many distinguished guests and posts from Clifton to Waco and Temple were represented.

Democratic Rally Draws Large Bosque County Crowd

More than 100 Bosque County Democrats gathered in Clifton at Charlie's Cafe for a May 24 rally. Speakers included W. R. Poage and James C. Sewell who urged party unity and highlighted campaign aims. Funds raised near 300 dollars supported the Democratic party while local leaders introduced candidates and stressed fellowship.

Reverend Knudsen Accepts Clifton Lutheran Pastorate

Reverend Stanley B. Knudsen, long associated with the Home Mission Department, accepts a call to Trinity Lutheran Church in Clifton to serve as pastor. He will succeed Reverend Walter T. Gigstad, who resigned, as the Clifton church’s leader and plans to begin by August 1 if possible. The Knudsen family, five children, and relocating to Clifton are noted as the move progresses.

Vacation Bible Schools Set to Begin Next Week

Several Clifton churches announce summer Bible schools starting June 2. United Church of Christ Womack runs June 2–13 from 8:30 to 11:00 AM. First Methodist from June 2–6 with closing service June 8. First Baptist June 2–11 with May 31 prep day. Trinity Lutheran June 2–? for two weeks 8:30–10:20. Immanuel Lutheran July 7–18. Teaching staff includes Mrs. Brynne, Mr. Reed, and church volunteers.

Clifton High School 1958 graduates receive diplomas

A crowd gathered at Bettis Auditorium Tuesday night May 27 to honor Clifton High School’s 34 graduates. Diplomas were presented by Kent Appleby with awards to Johnny Guy Lockhart, Bobby Bester, Marilyn Schramm, and Betty Gail Ludwig. Dr DeWitt C Reddick of UT Austin delivered the commencement address focusing on self understanding duty teamwork concentration and ideals.

Hot Rod Club To Be Organized In Clifton

Teen drivers in Clifton invited to a meeting at City Hall on May 29 at 8:00 p.m. to form a local Hot Rod Club sponsored by the Clifton Lions with Policeman James McDowell as sponsor. The club aims to join the National Hot Rod Association and will offer car repairs, safety checks, a club library, auto shows, speakers, and a drag strip under sponsor supervision.
