Texas settlement contract disputes in early colony era
Fragmentary UT library records reveal a clash over General Mercer and Charter Fenton Mercer’s Texas land scheme. The 1845 contract required settlement and surveys but was not fulfilled, with Mercer accused of failing to comply and surveys incomplete. The piece notes empressario practice, squatters, and ongoing land speculation in the Murcer colony as historians debate legality and future surveys.
