City officials dispute a sales push by agents citing consumer protection rules while several merchants claim pressure tactics. The clash centers on advertising claims and possible violations of local business conduct codes amid a tense market season.
Senator Morris Sheppard was sworn in today by the Vice President as new term of service began. Senator Culberson escorted him to the Senate bar and offered warm congratulations after the oath completion.
Miss Gertrude Gohlke and Rev. Ludwig C. F. Karcher of Eden Texas were married last Wednesday evening at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Clifton with Rev W H Bowie officiating. The couple will reside in Eden Texas after a brief wedding trip and are welcomed by family and friends.
By order of the Session a congregational meeting is called for the morning hour Sunday May 25 to elect two additional deacons. Services include 9:45 Sunday School 11:00 Preaching 4:00 Choir Practice 7:46 Christian Endeavor 8:30 Preaching. Pastor E. 8. Sansom invites all to attend.
Fort Worth Texas May 19 Governor William P Hobby will deliver an address on the courthouse lawn at 830 PM in support of the equal suffrage amendment A reception will follow for the Governor and Mrs Lena Gardner president of the Tarrant County Equal Suffrage Association announced tonight
Local businesses including Clifton Mercantile Co Farmers Guaranty Bank First Guaranty Bank and Clifton Lumber Co will close during each Day Entertainment of the upcoming Chautauqua to allow employers and workers to attend. Harvest season prompts accommodation for farmers needing twine and extras and for patients needing medicine from doctors and druggists.
Sam Sparks, former State Treasurer, filed an oil and gas claim on the Brazos river bed where Johnson and Bosque Counties meet, with the Johnson County Surveyor's office noting the filing.

Brest May 20 The steamers Rotterdam Finland Mobile and New Jersey sail today carrying over 20 000 troops. This completes the embarkation of the Eightieth Division and begins that of the Thirty-Sixth Division Texas and Oklahoma troops. The 143d Infantry embarked on the Finland. No less than 107 000 troops have been put on transports at Brest since May 1.
Legal holiday on Friday May 30 prompts Clifton banks to close for the day. Banks will resume operations on the following business day.
President Wilson's cabled outline for the extra session was read in the Senate and House. Leaders planned immediate action on the broad program, with woman suffrage to be taken up in the House tomorrow. The plan calls for private railroads, telegraphs and phones, repeal of war time prohibition for beer and wines, and various tax eliminations.
The United Methodist Centenary drive for 1919 aims to raise 130 million dollars to boost missionary work abroad and in the home field. Through May 18 to 25 the South church set a 35 million target and Clifton Church reported 2,800 raised in about three hours with nine teams canvassing the community.
