In Galveston on March 8 190? colored dray drivers refused to haul lumber to the county jail saying the lumber would be used for Edmund Shelton's scaffold and that ghosts would haunt them. Sheriff Henry Thomas had ordered delivery but all black drivers declined citing fear of hants. a white contractor eventually delivered the lumber.
