Dam Breaks End a Dream of Electric Austin
A.P. Wooldridge championed diverting the Colorado River to power and irrigation in Austin. The McDonald Dam rose, costs surged, bonds passed, but the plant failed to generate reliable electricity. In 1900 a flood broke the dam, killing five men and three boys, damaging blocks of the city and leaving Austin without power until a coal plant arrived.
