H P Hayes arrived from Vernon Alabama and was shot and killed by City Marshal A C White at the Cleburne Hotel after an attempted peaceful removal failed. Hayes fired on officers from behind a door and near the bed as White entered the room, four shots striking Hayes who died minutes later. The coroner’s inquest returned a verdict of death by gunshot wound at the hands of A C White.
