Longtime Clifton Resident Herman Sager Dies at 74
Herman Sager born April 9 1859 in Provence Posen Germany died June 15 1933 near Clifton Texas. He landed in New York April 1 1881 and later moved to Independence Washington County then Bosque County in 1907 where he and Emelie Streich raised fourteen children. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm from the family residence with Rev Geo Diehm and burial in Clifton cemetery. He leaves his wife eight living children fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren, plus one brother W M Sager of Giddings Texas. The Record extends sympathy to the bereaved family.

Mrs Walter Calvert Undergoes Operation in Waco Sanitarium
Mrs Walter Calvert was taken to a sanitarium in Waco last Friday suffering from appendicitis and underwent an operation. The latest reports described her condition as satisfactory despite a very serious pre existing physical state.

Clifton Gets Forests Unit Established at City Park
A reforestation camp for 200 men arrived Monday in Clifton under Capt. Charles W. Hanna Lieut. J. A. Feagin and Capt. W. H. Lawton. The old City Park is deeded to the state for a park, with beautification the first task. Dams planned on Meridian Neills Childress Gary Turkey and Bee Creeks, begun by the Lions club, promising a fisherman’s paradise with good streams and fishing.

Committees Named For Bosque County Cotton Reduction Plan
Eight community cotton meetings will be held in Bosque County from June 26 to 28 to explain the reduction plan to farmers. County adjustment committee and county agent plan eight meetings at Iredell Walnut Springs Koppers Morgan Valley Mills Clifton Meridian Cranfills Gap. If enough acres are retired to yield 2,000,000 bales, the program begins with payments of 6 to 12 dollars per acre.

Mrs F J Spangle hosted the J O Y Bridge Club on Friday afternoon June 16 with blue gentian decor. High scores went to Mrs N M Willett and Mrs M K Bradstreet while guest Miss Margaret Hill posted high. Members enjoyed a molded salad, olives, cheese chips, iced tea and angel food cake for three tables of players with guests Elmo Canuteson and C O Bronstad. Lottie Bettis joined the club. Mrs H R Hill will entertain on Friday June 23 at 3 pm.

Reformatory Boys Kill Blacksmith With Ax
Four inmates at the State Reformatory for boys near Gatesville beat blacksmith W. J. Leonard to death with an ax on Wednesday afternoon and escaped in his 1925 Ford. Suspects Grady Applegate Willard Scott James Anderson and Clarence Raines were named by superintendent J. H. McLellan. The abandoned car was found in Meridian and two suspects were captured east of Clifton. officers expected the remaining two soon to be caught.

Washington reports nine day payless furloughs for postal service employees over the next three months to save 9.5 million dollars. An order signed by President Roosevelt and issued by Postmaster General Farley sets July 1 to September 30 as the period. Rural carriers will have equipment maintenance allowances cut to balance the budget.

Lions Host Army Officers At Clifton Luncheon
Clifton Lions Club guests at a Tuesday luncheon included Captain Hanna of the 9th United States Infantry who commands State Park Camp in the city Captain Lawton Medical Corps and Lieut Feagin Flying Corps attached to the camp. They praised local cooperation. Officers were made honorary Lions. a barbecue committee will assist Meridian Luncheon Club for the 4 H Encampment at Olson Park in July. State Park Camp 14 T houses 200 men converting 80 acres into a state park.

Snake in a rat trap nets 35 inch rattler in pen
Moran June 19 L A Waters trapped a 35 1 2 inch rattlesnake in a rat trap while checking a small guinea pen overrun with rats. The snake was caught six inches below the head and held by the trap. It had seven rattlers.

Meeting to Repeal the 18th Amendment in Bosque County
Citizens of Bosque County gathered in Meridian on June 20 to elect delegates for a repeal convention in Austin on June 27. Judge P. S. Hale was named Permanent Chairman with Henry D. Wintz as Secretary, and Dary L. Helm of Clifton was endorsed as delegate for the 21st Senatorial District. The meeting planned to organize county representation and set the convention for 10 a.m. at the University of Texas, Austin.
