After the Civil War Bosque County faced Indian threats with no local militia. In March 1867 Ole Nystel was captured during a raid near Meridian, leaving a frontier story tied to Nystel’s later memoir Three Months With The Wild Indians Lost And Found.
The account describes an 1800s raid killing two freedmen James Hasty and likely Clint McLennan, injuring an eye on a rider, and capturing Nystel who wandered through plains to Kansas before returning to Texas. Burial noted near Adventist Cemetery in Bosque County.
Outside the Clifton entrance lie old mill stones from the Norway Mills site in Neils Creek Valley on the Norse to Turnersville road about ten miles west of Clifton. They operated over twenty years a century ago grinding white flour graham flour and corn meal for Bosque County and surrounding stations. A.L. B.
Sixty eight senior citizens gathered at Clifton City Hall for games crafts and social time last Friday. Stella Vickrey returns after hospital and Sunset Home stay Laura Lillard also back from Clifton hospital. June birthday observance planned for this Friday June 23 from 1 to 3 pm at city hall.
August Schraeder was honored with a joint Fathers Day birthday dinner at the home of Mr and Mrs Homer McDougal in Clifton. A covered dish dinner was served on the patio. The 79th birthday date fell on Tuesday June 20 with the celebration on Sunday June 18. Attendees included Schraeder family members from Gatesville Stanton Crawford and Stephenville and Clifton.
