Bikes in Boondocks program expands to state parks

The Parks and Wildlife Department reports the Bikes in the Boondocks program is entering its second summer with trail and mini-bike areas in multiple parks. Erosion is lower than expected and litter is not a issue, though non street legal bikes leaving trails is a concern. New parks will be studied for additional routes as acquired.

Civil War frontier districts and the Dove Creek battle

George B. Erath recounts a three-district frontier system with cavalry majors in command and Gatesville as headquarters. A Kickapoo exodus to Mexico followed an inconclusive Dove Creek fight near San Angelo, where Confederate forces and local volunteers clashed with well armed Indians. The diary of Lowery Schruchfield adds December 1864 to January 1865 movements ending with heavy snow and several Basque militia deaths and injuries.
