About 100 Clifton Lions and visiting members attended a noon Tuesday luncheon. Mrs. Carroll McReynolds of First Federal Savings and Loan in Waco spoke on money and the economy, detailing recession versus depression and two inflation types.
Clifton Blue Sox top the Freshman standings at 3-0 while Meridian and Crawfills Gap sit 2-1 and Clifton Reds 0-3. In Pee Wee action Clifton Black Sox lead 2-0 with Meridian Valley Mills Clifton Greens and Clifton Reds all tied for second at 2-1. Upcoming games set Clifton Blacks at Meridian and Reds at Valley Mills with other matchups across divisions.
The Texas Highway Commission awarded a 43.3 mile seal coat project in the Waco district. Jeff Richards and Son of Belton won with a 67 842 60 dollar bid. Work lasts about 30 working days under District Engineer Brooks Evans with John Mounce Jr. in charge. The Bosque County segment covers FM 1238 from 6.7 miles west of Iredell to the Limestone County line.
Farm payments to begin July 1 with drafts issued after data sheets arrive from the Bosque County ASCS office. Clyde Henry notes 325,000 sheets received by May end and 2.25 million expected by August as payments are calculated in New Orleans. Early certification speeds payments, but accuracy on planted and base acres is essential.
A special meeting of the Clifton Band Parents is set for June 15 at 7 30 p m. All parents of band students are urged to attend as a vote to air condition the Band Hall and other business will be held.
J W Blewett sells Clifton Telephone Co to Jim Luther and associates effective July 1. Improvements include Direct Distance Dialing in August and a $50,000 upgrade for Clifton Cranfills Gap Turnersville Laguna Park with new building, dial equipment, and an expanded mobile system. No toll between Cranfills Gap and Clifton after completion.
Mrs. Carroll for First Federal Savings & Loan in Waco quoted economist Mrs. McReynolds predicting U.S. population surpassing 231 million this decade and average income rising to 13 000 by 1980. She warned about rising consumer spending, widespread credit, and financial insecurity despite wealth.
J Paul Howard defeats W L Gauntt by a wide margin in the Second Democratic Primary runoff. Turnout reaches 41.3 percent with 993 votes, highest in Mosheim box at 66.2 percent and Clifton at 41.9 percent. Howard to fill Curtis Bakke's Bosque County Commissioners seat.
A dedication ceremony for a historical marker will take place Saturday June 20 at 5 p.m. near the Pool Park location between Valley Mills and Clifton on Highway 6. Speaker will be Dr William C Pool descendant of landowners around the old tree. Relatives of first county officials and organizers will be recognized. The event invites attendees to bring chairs and emphasizes local history of Bosque County figures including Lowery H Scratchfield.
The Flying Scotsman will be on display at the MKT Katy Station in Waco on June 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibit includes the locomotive, two coal tenders, five cars, two WWII era cars used by Churchill and Eisenhower, and Edwardian observation and administrative cars. Old No. 4472 will depart for Dallas on June 18. The train, built in 1923, set the 100 mph record and first non stop London to Edinburgh run.
