Memories of a Small-Town Pageant and Visitors

A faded reminiscence describes a town scene from years ago featuring an illusionist, a hypnotist, a cornerstone ceremony for a new high school with speeches by the mayor and a governor, and a parade. It recalls Gypsies, fortune tellers, a money-vanishing show, and a human mannequin in a store window. The piece mentions an Indian baseball team, the Original Boston Bloomer Girls touring, and the shock of discovering the pitcher and catcher were men.

Eagles and motherhood in Australian lore by a former chaplain

A former Australian Army chaplain recounts a Sunshine Monthly tale of eagles nesting high above timberlines. He notes the mother pushes eaglets from ledges to teach flight, then catches them with a wingspan glide, a dramatic ritual repeated until fledglings fly. The piece blends vivid natural history with moral awe and cautionary notes.
