Motor Vehicle Tax Stamp Purchase Grows Amid Rumors

On Saturday June 10 motor vehicle tax stamps were sold as part of a federal tax. A. L. Bron mend from fiscal officials reported many owners had already bought stamps, while some planned to buy despite rumors of optional purchases. Officials warned penalties for nonpayment and noted the stamp costs align with wartime tax levels. The current stamp expires in one year June 3.

Marine Patrol Under Lit Hyde Beats Japs On Bougainville

Lt Lat Lieut Jon F. Hyde led a Marine patrol on Bougainville where Japanese forces landed 476 men across the Tuna River. Hyde’s unit, cut off from the main line, fought rear-guard actions along a jungle strip bounded by beach and river, with heavy casualties on both sides and Hyde earning a commando reputation.

Phillip Greenberg 1H son of Me and Mrs Leon Greenberg of Gutton won recognition as eligible to qualify for the weekly officer rating of boatswain third class during recruitment graduation at Naval Training School Bernardino University of Tinoin Graney. He completed a course in receiving and sending International code, learned pelorus and range finder use, and studied weather tides light and sound, electricity. He will be eligible for further advancement after his first active duty aboard a ship or shore station.

Farm Machinery Course Operating This Weekends

The Shop opens at 2 pm and remains open until 8 pm each day in September on Saturdays and Sundays. Repair of suspended machinery has received special attention over the past two weeks. More farmers are urged to stop by the shop when needed. There are no charges for this service as it is part of a Federal subsidy program.

Local Colored Man Diea After Long Winess

Fett Williams, colored, age years, died at his home near Clifton last Thursday after many months illness and was buried in the colored cemetery just east of town. Sunsky afternoon, Jett was a favorite of most of the white people of Clifton, having worked in many homes and cafes, an expert in that line of work. Jeff will be greatly missed by his own race. he was a leader in church work.

Clifton reports $15,417.50 in bonds sold during the first three days of the Fifth War Loan Drive. Local chairman Bronstad notes $11,250 in Series W bonds and calls for broader participation to reach the Clifton quota of $171,000. The committee in charge postponed the Old Settlers Picnic and Reunion at Pool Park near Gittonach until July 4, 1945 due to wartime conditions. They expect a larger, elaborate event in 1946 if conditions allow.

Clifton College Alumni Association held its annual business meeting and banquet at City Hall on Saturday evening May 20 1946 with many alumni and friends present. The program included songs and tributes to alumni and ex-students who served in World War II. The association voted to buy two war bonds for the College Dormitory Fund and appointed a committee to oversee the fund.

Oak Leaf Cluster Awarded to Sgt Roland L Zander

Staff Sergeant Roland L Zander, 20, tail gunner on an Eighth Air Force Flying Fortress at a station in England, has been awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster I to the Air Medal for meritorious achievement on heavy bombardment missions over enemy occupied continental Europe. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Alex Zander of Clifton. Before entering service he was a student at Clifton High School.

Mother Of Mrs W W Land Is Buried Monday

Mrs W W Land of Clifton mourns as her mother Mrs Hurst dies Sunday afternoon in Austin hospital after long illness. Born October 2, 1809 in Bowstown Arkansas, she moved to Texas with parents in 1885 and lived much of life in Waco and Atlan. Married J D Horst December 25, 47, she was a faithful Baptist and active in church activities. Survived by five brothers and one sister. daughter Willie Mac Land of Clifton and granddaughter Mrs Hurt. Burial plans not fully listed.

Lions Hear Appeal For Support Of War Bond Drive

The Clifton Lions Club met June 1 at the Presbyterian Indies kitchen for a meal as officers for the coming year were announced. New officers, vetted previously, will be installed. Sigs Wallace N. Danson announced the incoming presidency and new committees. Chief appeal urged Fifth War Loan Drive with a personal plea for members to justify buying bonds or write reasons to a fighting relative. Bronstad urged Lions to aid Red Cross allotment of 144 Red Cross kits for soldiers. A committee was named to assess sending delegates to the Lions International Convention in Chicago. New member David Cormany joined. guests included Buster Brown candidate for State Senate and Captain S. L. Witcher of the Army Medical Corps.

Locker Increase In State Remarkable

The Texas extension survey reports 201 locker plants in 120 counties doubling from 129. Dallas County leads, with four in Lynn Lamb Hidalgo and Bastrop counties each. Average plant holds 380 boxes, totaling 60341 saved for 55262 families. In 1944 about 26 million pounds of food, ~872 pounds per family, were stored in these boxes.
