First Bathtub Import History From England 1820
The first user of a bathtub in this country was Eli Whitney who imported one from England about 1820 and kept it in his front yard in New York. Adam Thompson of Cincinnati used a later mahogany tub in 1842, watched by guests at dinner as physicians warned of rheumatic and lung risks. By 1889 Philadelphia debated tub bans and Boston passed rules limiting tub use, with water-rate hikes and Virginia levying a $30 annual tax on tubs. A contemporaneous nationwide poll by the Nation Fl Association of Manufacturers sparked debate on spending.
