Fashion History From Elizabethan Wardrobe Customs
The text outlines 16th century dress details during Elizabeth I’s era. It notes gowns totaling about 300 in one period, additions of new drapes, the use of padding under gowns, ball shapes from the interior, and the parthingale evolving in the second half. It describes whalebone waist cinching, underskirts, petticoats, and the rise of a wooden corset with ribbens. Neck frills and later large ruffs appear, with starch enabling bigger collars. English knowledge of tart starch reportedly arrived about a decade after Elizabeth’s accession, and a writer called starch the devil's liquor. Hair color is described as red or reddish with some women dyeing to match.
