Farm labor and high road costs in 1980s state tone
In Mecontoches Latham Wells earns 2.50 per hour milking cows, after earning 476.00 for two weeks with 97.90 in hauling, 18 for feed. The piece discusses rising automobile ownership, highway financing, and road taxes as motorists shoulder road costs. It notes 26,000,000 cars and compares vehicle taxes to fund paving programs, citing Indiana’s potential 5 dollar license increase to speed pavement of a safe highway system over five years. The report blends local farmer notes with national transport policy context.
