Washington January 15 The War Department asked Senator Chamberlain to introduce a bill requiring registration for military duty for all men who turned 21 since June 5. A second bill would allow furloughs for national army members to work on harvest crops and other farm duties.
Floyd Glass, longtime Navy enlistee and four time promoter, has been honorably discharged and immediately reenlisted for ten years. By Navy Department order he now leads the Navy recruiting station at Waco Texas. This appointment is a reward for long service and duty well performed.
Washington officials report that excessive expense claims by local draft boards prompted General Crowder to push new rules. Boards will receive up to thirty dollars per member classified, plus clerks’ pay. old limits were 150 dollars monthly per member.
Revenue officers explain allowed business deductions for farming in January and February. Deductions cover labor, land preparation, cultivation, harvesting and marketing, seed and land costs, fertilizer, livestock care, feed, repairs to farm buildings and fences, machinery parts, and small tools. Farm produce value and stock sales are noted, with emphasis on proper farm tax reporting for 1917 and urging compliance.
