First baby of 1977 born New Year's Day

Dwight Wayne Bible was the first baby born in 1977 at Goodall-Witcher Hospital Foundation in Clifton County arriving at 9:45 am on New Year’s Day. His mother Lou Ann Bible and father were photographed for The Clifton Record. A sponsor gift program offered items from local businesses, with a signed introduction letter to redeem prizes for the newborn.

Window broken at Central Texas Lumber Co.

Clifton police report a brick shattered a window at Central Texas Lumber Company 201 East 5th Street with no entry or theft found. An adult male was arrested Thursday on driving while intoxicated and jailed in Meridian on a $1000 bond. A Sunday collision at Highway 6 and Hackberry damaged two vehicles lightly and moderately without injuries.

Bell's Foods joins retailers in coffee price protest

Bell's Foods Inc of Clifton joins national retailers to curb rising coffee costs. A local supermarket sign by Scotty Bell urges customers to substitute coffee where possible to force price reductions by large companies.

Two Injured In Pickup Crash East Of Valley Mills

A 1973 pickup overturned on Farm Market Road 56 ten miles east of Valley Mills on New Year’s Day injuring two men. Driver Michael R. Herzog and passenger I. Ricky Benfer were treated at Goodall-Witcher Hospital. Herzog suffered back injury, a broken collarbone, and bruises. Benfer had a head injury and broken shoulder blade and was sent to Hillcrest Hospital, Waco. Texas DPS Troopers Gerald Baker and Acey Steel investigated and commended the ambulance crew.

Grass fires fought here by Clifton volunteers

Four grass fires drew Clifton Volunteer Fire Department crews this past week. A Dec 27 blaze near the old Meridian Highway by the municipal airport burned 15 minutes. Dec 29 saw a truck battle a grass fire toward Valley Mills for an hour near the railroad tracks. A Dec 31 effort at N P Powell Ranch lasted two hours. Firefighters also worked 45 minutes at the Erich Prescher property Friday.

Immunization Clinic Resumes at Clifton City Hall

The immunization clinic for ages infancy to 19 resumes at Clifton City Hall from 10 to 12 noon on Thursday Jan 6. Announced by Eloise Burch R N Bosque County school nurse. Swine flu clinic scheduling had disrupted regular clinics. Shots protect against diphtheria tetanus whooping cough polio measles and German measles.

Baldridge Named Assistant Publisher At Clifton Record

Robert L Baldridge Jr assistant publisher of The Clifton Record is named to the post after rejoining the newspaper in September. The move honors his long service including prior posts as Clifton postmaster and Senate enrolling clerk and follows his retirement from the postmaster role.

Hog Creek Watershed bids opened January 24

The Soil Conservation Service advertises bids to build the first floodwater retarding structure in the Hog Creek Watershed Project. Public bid opening is at 2 p.m. January 24 at the Texas Soil Conservation Office in Temple. The project covers 58,460 acres across Hamilton Coryell Bosque and McLennan counties with multiple structures and channel work planned.

Children’s photos scheduled in Cranfills Gap on Jan 14

A Waltz Studios photographer will visit Cranfills Gap Friday January 14 to photograph area children for a pictorial feature in The Clifton Record. Sessions run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lucille Thomas Real Estate Agency. Appointments via Ruth Tucker at 817-597-2684 or 597-2579. All color photos will be published in black and white.
