A Clifton columnist explains type writer quirks and a sore left middle finger from misaligned keys. He notes a clinic visit for tests and relies on rest as advised by his doctor amid a busy newsroom week.
Col Homer Garrison Jr of the Texas Department of Public Safety explains that starting January 1 1968 all licenses will include a color photo. Renewals require in person visit to a DPS office for a vision test signature and a new photo.
A digest of 1967 events lists Clifton area notes from January to May including Sunset Home plans for an 800000 facility, multiple court totals, school and civic activities, elections, pageants, police chief resignation, airport dedication by Lt Gov Smith, and numerous community events and sports results.
Clifton Golf Club members meet January 4 at 7 30 p m in City Hall dining room to hear Meridian Lake course representatives. They will explain plans location costs and future membership and offer Clifton members a path to join the new club. There are 50 Clifton members now.
Clifton Cubs and Bruceville-Eddy Eagles share Central Texas Jinx Tucker Memorial Trophy after voting ties. Clifton reached the state Class AA final with a 13 2 season. Bruceville-Eddy, an 8 3 Cinderella run, beat Crawford and advanced to regional finals.
Bosque County Tax Assessor-Collector Earl Behringer announces 1968 registration by mail or in person at the Meridian courthouse. Citizens 21 or older must register by January 31 to vote after March 1, 1968. No fee. Persons over 60 must register this year under the new law.
CHS basketball begins after football success and practice gaps. Boys Open with two losses while girls post six wins and three losses. Roster lists juniors Hansen Hoel Cranfill. sophomores Hafer Wiede Reesing Dossman Gaskamp. freshmen Wallace Dreyer Burden Billman Canuteson Lee. Schedule follows on back page.
At least two people were injured in three area wrecks over the New Year weekend. A 1965 sedan driven by Lottie Bowman collided with a grain truck on Highway 6 near Iredell, spilling grain and blocking the road. The driver Gary Pitts suffered minor injuries. On the Bosque River bridge at Meridian two icy crashs occurred within three minutes. James Bakke and passengers Sorenson and Connie Brown were involved, with Sorenson treated at Clifton hospital.
A Clifton woman, Margret Ann Bible, was charged January 1 with assault with intent to murder in the shooting of her husband Joe Bible. She was released without bond on her own recognizance as evidence is prepared for the next grand jury. Joe Bible was shot five times and treated at Clifton’s Goodall-Witcher Hospital before transfer to Hillcrest in Waco.
Postmaster Baldridge announces new postal rates effective Sunday January 7. First class rises to six cents for letters up to 13 ounces and ten cents for air mail up to 7 ounces. postcards five cents. air mail postcards eight cents. He notes paper and magazine rates also rise, with higher charges for advertising and third class mail. He explains merged rates for heavier pieces and flat rates up to one pound, with over one pound using existing parcel post adjustments.
