Cub Banquet a Success for Clifton Cubs Fans at Armory

About 385 football enthusiasts attended the Clifton High Cubs banquet at the National Guard Armory in Clifton last Saturday night. The event featured an invocation by Isaac Traylor and a barbecue dinner by Jetton’s Ft Worth catering. Master of ceremonies Holder introduced Bobby Joe Conrad of the St Louis Pardina era, who urged boys to pursue athletics and further education. Claude Gilstrap, Arlington State College coach, was introduced and spoke to the crowd.

Oswald M Olson Dies in Temple Hospital February 5

Oswald M Olson aged 86 years 9 months 12 days died February 5 at Temple Veterans Hospital after long illness. Born and raised in the Norse community west of Clifton he lived at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home since 1954 and nearby stall home later. A World War I veteran and Texas Ranger he married Clarice Amilereen about 1903 and had two sons Odell and Errol.

Clifton QB Jerry Allen Nets Baylor Football Scholarship

Baylor University has accepted Clifton High School senior Jerry Allen for a football scholarship, confirmed by Baylor assistant coach Jack Thomas. Allen, son of Mr and Mrs R Allen, was Clifton Cubs quarterback last season and signed on the first athletic scholarship signing day. Ernest Erickson, another Clifton alumnus, is finishing a four year Baylor scholarship this semester.

Mock Trial for Seniors and Civics Students Planned

A county bar association mock trial will be held in Meridian Courtroom on February 17 at morning hours. About 100 seniors or civics students will attend with one or two jurors from each school. The case concerns a cattle theft with Meridian High School and Cranfills Gap High School participants and local lawyers assisting.

Mabry Helton Dies After Illness at 75

Clifton mourns Mabry W Helton 75 of 314 North Avenue who died after a heart condition and a 1988 electrical shock. Born January 20, 1880, he was a son of John K Helton and Nancy Alsup Helton and grandson of prominent Bosque County families. He lived west of Meridian and worked with his brother Ed on river levees before later joining Lee McSpad. He passed away early Monday morning after ambulance transport to the local hospital.

Clifton Lions Hear Highway Safety Officer

Clifton Lions Club heard Bobby Williams of the Texas Highway Department Waco District speak on traffic safety. He noted 1964 traffic deaths could reach 3002 by March 15 and cited driver error as the key factor among road and vehicle conditions.

Blood samples taken for walking blood bank in Clifton

251 residents donated blood at the Goodall and Witcher Clinic last week to establish a local walking blood bank for civil defense needs. Dr. Donald A. Groff said the five day effort drew strong participation, with 22 on Monday and 67 on Thursday. Some veterans discovered mismatches with dog tag listings and had their samples rechecked. A three week window remains for qualified candidates to file for Clifton City Council and Clifton Independent School District Board of Trustees vacancies this year. The school board election is set for April 3 with a 30 day filing deadline to Bosque County Judge Jack Railshack in Meridian, while the city election is on April 6 with a 30 day filing deadline to the Clifton City Office. Illness Affects Clifton School Attendance

Kent Appleby superintendent of Clifton Public Schools said attendance improved since last week with about five percent absent on Tuesday Morning. He noted high water from heavy rain delayed some students from reaching school and that illness has shifted from younger to older pupils recently.
