A group of 10 Clifton High School seniors visited Tarleton State University in Stephenville on Wednesday December 3. They registered and attended sessions about the college curriculum, had lunch, and a reception at the Student Center. Students listed include Kim Davie Christy Eggen Steve Henry Sarah Homersad Tina Hyde Mike Maples Jan Marchal Tod Reeder.
Coach Jake Wimberly reports the Seventh Grade Cubettes won 26 to 23 over China Spring to move to five wins no losses. Lisa Rowe led with 16 points as Janice Horak Renea Hyde Brenda Bary and Evelyn Tyssen contributed on both ends. District play opens January 8 at 5 pm versus McGregor at Clifton.
The Cubs opened with a 3-65 loss to Wariled Them, then won against Hamilton 66-44 and China Spring 38-37 on a last second shot. They lost to Stephenville 1 in the Stephenville Tournament, then beat Hamilton 52-453. JV opened 59-36 at Clifton, then 35-39 and 42-28 in later games. Community support is urged for more strong basketball.
The Cubette varsity posted a 50 season record with junior varsity at 54. Sherry Finstad led varsity forwards with guards Tita Hyde Teresa Beker and Janet Sanders. JV guards were Lerry Conrad Emily Key and Lisa Hill. After losses to Crawfills Gap 61-38 the team edged Aquila City 54-54 in double overtime and defeated Penelope 75-35.
A class trip to Otis Olsen's Rock Shop explored mineral slicing and jewelry making. Mr. Olson provided polished stones for practice as students viewed specimens and the Clifton High School Library displayed the work.
Clifton Independent School District staged its annual Christmas program December 7 with all marshall adents and band students participating. The show featured combined choir and band acts including Skates, Red Nosed Reindeer, Winter Wonderland, and Sleigh Ride. Dorald Braun led the bands with Mrs. Patsy Lancaster supervising.
Clifton High School Home and Family Living class visited sites in Waco on a December field trip. The group toured the Mental Health and Retirement? Center and heard guest speaker Jim Nez with Clara Van Den Berg speaking on educational services. They then visited Planned Parenthood and Family Counseling Center with Pat Laicier and finally Hirres Hospital where Chaplain Curtis Holand and Ann Loy greeted them. The students praised the trip and thanked M. Snider for driving the bus.
The annual staff visited Dallas on December 10 for a Taylor Publishing Company tour. Students learned printing processes firsthand, viewing yearbooks and equipment, then enjoyed lunch in the company cafeteria.
The event titled One 25 the Future of America hosted guest Alice Brandenburger to show Christmas craft ideas for FHA adopted grandparents. Attendees saw creative uses of scrap material tin cans and common household items turning into gift ideas at low cost.
The Eighth Grade Cubettes suffered their first loss, 27 to 25, as China Spring proved stronger. Guards Lisa Sanders, Shirley Phillips, Karen Wood, Kim Adams, Phyllis Homerstad, Lisa Bosher and Katey Jones kept the ball moving but shooting struggled. Bar Schulze scored six, Kathy Horak ten, Dana Raines seven, Homerstad two.
Ole M. Finstad, an American soldier stationed in Epinel France, writes to Siman Swenson on December 27 1918 describing cold weather in France a white Christmas shortly after his first front trip on October 9 1918. He recalls friends and travel time to France recounts longing to return hopes for harvest back home and asks to pass greetings to family and friends including Mr and Mrs L L Lund Lawrence Pau line and others.
The November FHA session on the 24th and 25th featured Kathy Teichmiller presenting handmade baskets for members to give as gifts. Alice Brandenburger demonstrated Christmas gift ideas and refreshments were served. Members voted on the FHA emblem, selecting the existing red and white eight sided figure with a house and the inscription Future ward New Horizons, marking 30 years in 1975.
