Ray Harper of Route 2 Iredell was killed and his daughter Mrs. Madelyn Harper Porter of Route 2 Iredell injured when their car rear ended a tractor trailer north of Meridian on State Highway 6 Friday December 19. Bruce Monty Lockhart of Denver Colorado the truck driver was not hurt. Porter was driving the 1967 Dodge and the truck was a 1961 White rig. Patrolman Bill Walk said evidence suggests the driver fell asleep or misjudged speed and there were no skid marks. The vehicles traveled about 100 feet from impact to stop.
Farmers State Bank in Clifton will close at noon on Christmas Eve and reopen on the 26th. The following week the bank closes only on New Year's Day. Residents are urged to plan around these dates to handle banking.
Clifton Girls edge Valley Mills 45 43 in overtime to claim the championship trophy. Valley Mills boys win by 52 50 over McGregor. Clifton Cubs take consolation 62 50. Thursday prelims include Clifton over McGregor 59 27 and Valley Mills over Moody 46 33. All Tournament players named Kim Outlaw Diane Burns Peggy Schmidt Shirley Southern Janet Cannon Betty Messiter.
Area churches share plans for Christmas Eve candlelight and communion services. First United Methodist Clifton holds 7 p.m. service on Christmas Eve led by Rev. Cleon Flanagan. New Year’s Eve communion hours 6 to 8 p.m. Joint Eve program planned by First Presbyterian Clifton and Zion United Church of Christ with Rev. Frank Horak Jr. Trinity Lutheran Clifton hosts 7 29 p.m. candlelight on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day 10 a.m. worship led by Rev. Erwin Knitt. Our Savior’s Lutheran Norse Christmas Day 10 a.m. service led by Rev. Albert Petrich. Deadline for New Year notices is Monday Dec 29 to publish next week's issue.
The Texas Highway Department unveils a computerized system to simplify 1970 licenses. Seven million vehicles will be registered with mailed renewal forms, a new color scheme for plates, and clear steps to renew at county offices or by mail. The program aims to reduce lines and speed plate issuance.
The Waco Social Security Office at 3326 Franklin Avenue will be closed on December 27 and January 3 due to the holiday period. Regular Saturday hours resume January 10, with Saturday access normally 9:00 a.m. to noon.
