Changing Travel Patterns Bar Holiday Traffic Death Estimate

Col Wilson E Suck, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, warns that shifting travel patterns from an energy shortage prevent valid estimates of holiday traffic deaths in Texas. He hopes deaths stay below last year’s 14.5 daily average and the New Year’s 5 daily average, noting comparable holiday periods but longer 102 hour spans this year. Speir cautions that reduced speeds by some, while others drive fast, could raise deaths. He urges right lanes, no alcohol, and warns spare gasoline containers may raise risk. The Christmas to New Year period runs December 21 to 25 and December 28 to January 1, with full DPS enforcement and Operation Motorcide. Information on fatal crashes will be released in Austin three times daily.
