Roosevelt cuts Texas NYA funds hit public schools and colleges
President Roosevelt orders general appropriation curtailments sharply reducing NYA aid in Texas. Kellum says $1,260,000 pulled from state NYA funds will cut aid to public schools by half and college student assistance by 26 percent. Out of school work will shrink, rolls down to about 7000, with 4000 aid terminated this month and remaining funds spread through January and February. About 1150 girls lose part time residency center support over 90 days. Also reports a new WPA Community School Lunch unit opens at Rock Springs colored school serving roughly 30 children daily, boosting countywide lunches to about 125 daily across ten units, with 41 employed and payroll of $1669.00.
