James Wright elected president of the Clifton Baseball and Sports for Youth Association for spring and summer baseball. Doug Railsback named vice-president and Mrs. J. M. Finstad re-elected secretary-treasurer. Applications to participate due by April 15 with a $5 registration fee, deadline 12 noon at Clifton City Hall dining room.
Clifton Golfers voted to cut annual dues from 25 to 15 dollars to attract more active members. Twenty five golfers attended and paid on the spot. J C Kincheloe was elected president with B P Holt as vice president and Robert L Baldridge Jr secretary treasurer.
Clifton community appeal shows $50,000 goal with $25,995 raised, 52 percent. Congregation drive reached $66,041.50 of $70,000 goal, 94 percent. Friends group contributed $3,863.75 of $13,000 target, 30 percent. Overall totals: $133,000 goal and $95,900.25 raised.
Breakfast at Clifton school costs 10 cents for children and 25 cents for adults and runs from 7 55 to 8 20 a m as a trial. Mrs Alvin Spitzer the cafeteria supervisor says the Texas Education Program supports starting breakfast in schools and urges town children to arrive early. The Record prints both breakfast and lunch menus for the week.
The 15th annual Miss Lake Whitney Pageant comes to Clifton Bettis Auditorium Friday and Saturday with 41 entrants, including Clifton’s Linda McMillan 18 sponsored by Clifton Funeral Home. Junior contest starts 8 p.m. Friday with 20 entrants. senior pageant follows at 8 p.m. Saturday featuring at least 21 contestants. The pageant serves as a regional for International Beauty Congress in Long Beach, California.
Lt Governor Preston Smith praised Clifton's new municipal airport at a Saturday dedication that featured an air show with Navy jets, stunt flying and parachute jumps by the White Barons. He cited local growth, bank deposits, and business development as signs of progress. The event, co hosted by the city and Clifton Jaycees, honored A G Thompson of the Texas Aeronautics Commission for aiding airport facilities.
Clifton Lilve notes that, contrary to fashion experts, most men would like their wives to wear their dresses about three years longer, reflecting a traditional style preference.
Clifton High Coach Richard Liardon’s Cubs host Jonesboro in the season opener at 7 p.m. The 23 man squad lists starters Felan Leck Ledlow Forson Rommel Bird Anz Thompson Bird Grimland on the mound. Senior and junior leaders highlighted. roster includes sophomores and freshmen.
CHS releases its baseball slate with Thursday April 6 at Jonesboro and Monday April 10 at Meridian. Other district dates include April 17 Hillsboro April 19 Jonesboro April 24 Meridian April 26 Hillsboro May 2 Glen Rose May 4 Itasca May 9 Whitney and May 12 Meridian.
Tickets priced 1.50 for reserved and 1.00 for general admission are on sale from JayCees Calverts Pharmacy and the Community Public Service building with gate sales available. Advance purchases urged for reserved seats as supply is limited. Lake Whitney contestants include Phyllis White Janis Parker and Darryl Payne with multiple entrants from nearby towns. The event features junior Miss Lake Whitney Jackie Knapp crowning a new winner with returning double winner Jan Bayless Warren guiding the stage and Clifton Jaycees co-sponsoring for a strong 15th year pageant atmosphere. A five-member judging panel and Clifton High Orchestra provide the program’s musical support.
