The Fifty Third Congress tracks daily business with Senate addressing executive questions and Hawaiian matters while House committees push statehood for Utah. Debates on naval personnel and streamlined accounting proceed as Utah admission dominates the agenda.
Chicago dispatch reports Assistant States Attorney opened Prendergast trial with a jury address outlining the prosecution plan. Todd praised Mayor Harrison and drew parallels to Lincoln and Garfield assassinations while Wade prepared the defense. Todd argued the prisoner was sane at the time, pointing to his preserved senses and self protection during and after the shooting. Prendergast grew pale and recoiled in agitation as the story was told.
Frank Porterfield, former cashier of the defunct Commercial National Bank in Nashville, Tenn, was sentenced by Judge Sager to ten years in a Kings County prison in Brooklyn, N Y, after his motion for a new trial was overruled. Assistant cashier W H Scoggins received a $100 fine and costs after pleading guilty to certifying checks, with the district attorney noting he merely followed orders.
Major J A Carpenter named pension agent for eleven states with disbursing about seven million dollars annually. He will take charge in January, after a dispatch notified him Monday. The post was held during the last Cleveland administration.
The National Farmers Congress begins in Savannah with few delegates present. President Smith of Kansas absent. J. G. Purse of Georgia presides as committees are named and resolutions on waterways mail service and farmer rail relations are discussed. Daniel Needham addresses interdependence of state business relations. General Burkitt’s address is read due to illness, advocating silver remonetization and western southern unity. Adjournment set for Wednesday night.
Reports from Chicago and Buffalo describe labor tariff disputes and a major fire. A Ward victory on the first ballot tops Carnes as delegates discuss McKinley and Wilson bills. A deadly Arcade fire in Buffalo destroys Robinsons Music theater and Shea's hall, with total losses near 1.5 million dollars.
The farmers congress held at 10 o'clock Thursday supported a comprehensive plan for improved waterways and harbor upgrades with liberal appropriations. They backed faster rural mail delivery and urged extending free mail to the countryside while preventing rate cuts until triweekly service is achieved in townships over ten people per square mile. Officers were elected: President B F Churton, Vice President G M Ayall, Secretary J M Stahl, Assistant Secretary W G Whitby, Second Assistant Secretary T J Appleyard, Treasurer Henry Hayden. The next session will be in Parkersburg, October 3, 1884.
