Clare high school announces Homecoming events for October 26. Activities include queen selection, pep rally, bonfire, snake dance, parade of bands down McEwan street, football game, and alumni dance. Ithaca High will join parade as part of the Fiesta weekend promotions.
Clare Chamber of Commerce retailers win approval for Claré's Fall Fiesta of Bargains timed to Clare school homecoming October 26 and 27. The event will feature displays of local products, decorations, costumes, and volunteer staff to boost the local economy.
Vice Admiral James A. Holloway Jr announced the 11th annual NROTC competitive exams for high school seniors on December 8 with applications due by November 17. The Navy funds tuition and provides a $600 annual retainer for four years as cadets study at civilian colleges with NROTC units, leading to a commission after four years.
Lois Birdsall of Farwell becomes the Sentinel’s new Farwell correspondent joining the staff on this week’s news. She follows Ellen Graham whose teaching duties in Clare county keep her busy as Greenwood Grange Elm Grove and Lake George areas seek local reporters.
The Clare Rotary Club announces the Rotary Chronicle will be sold on October 26 in Clare. Rotarians handle writing editing and sales with a manufacturing focused theme and feature articles. The edition coincides with High School homecoming and autumn sales events.
A $4900 finance drive to support the Boy Scouts in Clare county will conclude with a door to door and business canvass early next week. County officials lead a separate drive and withdraw from the United fund this year. Tomahawk District University of Scouting Leaders Training Course begins October 2 at Clare High School with separate Cub Scout and Boy Scout tracks directed by Robert Pinaire and Stan Ryan. Training runs Tuesdays 7:30 p.m. through November 6 for Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Den Mothers, Den Dads, and others in Clare and Isabella counties.
Clare and Harrison artists met at Mrs. Virginia Seitz home to form an area art group. The group will run the annual Clare art exhibit and plan lectures and local sales. A five member committee led by Mrs. Ruth Marble as chair and Mrs. Ednad Sellers as secretary treasurer was elected. Other members are Mrs. Patricia Pinaire Grace McArthur and Ruth Blanchard. Past and present Clare art students and exhibitors will join, along with other area artists and art patrons.
Clare High School faced a decisive 12-0 loss as Lutheran Seminary dominated up front at Saginaw. The Pioneers showed moments of offense with Beery Crawford and Dick Roe but could not mount a sustained drive or finish on several promising downs.
Voters at the Wildcat school district in Sheridan Township No 4 rejected annexation. The tally was 27 opposed to 21 in favor. The district sits in the southeast corner of Sheridan, adjoining Carrow Colerville and McKinley districts in Glare County and Loomig and Herrick in Isabella.
The United States Patent Office grants Ron Cooper of Clare, Massachusetts, patent number 2,762,785 issued September 11, 1956, for an improved acid and water resistant mortar. The cement uses an aqueous alkali metal silicate and a silicone, promising easy troweling and eliminates the need for on-site water moistening.
Jack Courter of Warrison paid a 100 dollar fine and 4.30 dollars costs after pleading guilty to speeding in Clare Municipal Court on a West Fifth Street curve crash that killed a motorist. Court records show he originally faced a jury trial and stood mute at first hearing.
Clare Public School staff attended the Regional Council of the Michigan Education Association dinner at Bay City’s T. L. Handy High School. Topics focused on new organizational problems and boosting regional teaching membership as part of the Centennial Program. The Isabella Clare District Governing Board held a pot-luck supper and planning session at 4-H Camp with attendees including Kathryn Eroh Verona White and Myrtie Bowerman planning the November 8 general district meeting.
Farwell Bank President Allen Graham fell from a ladder while scraping paint and injured his leg. He recovered briefly on crutches but then became violently ill and was admitted to Clare Hospital. Hospital officials reported his condition improving after tests.
Isaac W. Shaner age 68 of Mt Pleasant died Wednesday morning at Clare Hospital. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Gilmore Church of Christ with Coker Funeral Home in charge. He will rest at the former family residence in Gilmore from Friday until services. He leaves his wife and two children Clarence Shaner of Gilmore and a daughter Mrs Pleasant.
Mr and Mrs George Battleshaw and their eight children lost their home and all possessions in a fire five miles southwest of Lake. The blaze, started by a stove pipe or wiring, left them with no insurance and they now live with relatives.
Dr. B. J. Gershon and Dr. J. R. Gershon start construction on a 2000 square foot clinic on West Beech Street north of Clare city hall. Sanford Mott builds it. opening planned around year start. The facility will include lab, x rays, electrocardiography, diagnostic services, physio therapy, minor surgery, a child play area, and modern air conditioning with cork floors and acoustic ceilings.
Riverside Grange Clare county won first prize in a four county competition for a Grange Community Service project. Mr and Mrs Bernard Allen accepted the Beautiful State Grange flag as Riverside was named winner. Fifteen projects aimed at community betterment formed the entry. The district winner advances to the state level to compete with ten other districts.
A dinner meeting of Representative Citizens will be held at the Hotel Doherty on Tuesday October 2 at 6 p.m. to inform locals about campaign plans for a fund drive supporting Central Michigan Hospital. The goal is 471,900 for hospital expansion and service, with a street by street Clare canvass announced. Hospital Board of Directors hosts the event.
The First Congregational Church will host three October political forums for Democratic and Republican candidates. Incumbent Charles Prescott and Clayton Dishong open on Oct 11, followed by William Kelly and Elford Cederberg on Oct 18, and Robert Sawyer versus Russell Strange on Oct 24. Each candidate will speak about twenty minutes with a five-question period. The event aims to illuminate democratic process and attract all registered voters.
Clare Little League field will be plowed dragged and freshly seeded this Saturday following a league meeting. Volunteers are asked to bring rakes and show up any time Saturday morning through the day to assist with the work.

Janet L. Nevill daughter of Mr and Mrs Loran Nevill of Clare has enrolled in Chicago s Moody Bible Institute. The school founded 69 years ago by Dwight L Moody has trained about 59 500 for Christian service with over 1 000 day students and a similar number in evening classes. About 25 000 study correspondence courses annually.

Sanford Brown state treasurer known as Farmer or Sandy Brown toured pass county on Friday September 21 visiting Clare Manufacturing employees and dining with the County Democratic Committee at Doherty Hotel. Also present were candidates Robert Sawyer Glen Crane and Michael Doherty. Brown urged aid for small farms and promised future town meeting visits.
Stewart Kinde announced a new Pioneers Booster Club to support local high school sports. The group meets at Clare Public School tonight at 7 for officer elections and planning. The main goal is an electric scoreboard and time clock for the CHS football field, funded by booster memberships.
Patrol Boy of the Week is Bill Hanchett in Miss Joan Bond's sixth grade. This is his first year as a patrol boy and he was elected lieutenant by the class. He accompanies the captain to ensure duties are performed and lives at 321 John Street. He enjoys sports, building model airplanes, and reading.
