Dairymen Urged To Feed Grain For Winter Shortage
Michigan State University dairy experts warn hay supplies will dip about nine percent this winter. Dairymen should plan to substitute grain or silage, aiming at minimum 15 pounds of hay per cow daily, with grain intakes around 5900 pounds per cow and protein supplements of 500 to 700 pounds. The best herds may exceed 6000 pounds of grain, yielding higher milk output and butterfat.
